Unleaded fuel filler restrictor for Lemans fuel cap

What did people do to restrict your lemans cap to the unleaded filler diameter? Is there a "known" insert available that I should be using? I would like to keep the lockable cap under the flap, or replace it with another lockable cap.

I can make one, but if there is something available that just works, that would be easier!

Cheers

I used an RA model Rodeo filler neck and cap, it lives inside the LeMans cap.

I think I have some spare filler pipes with caps.

sambo 08-27-2013 08:00 PM

Modena, are you in the habit of pulling up at the diesel pump or is this another stupid requirement?

Gav 08-27-2013 08:02 PM

I bought mine with the LeMans cap from Snakebite.
Maybe AP might be supplying them now?

Modena 08-27-2013 08:08 PM

Sambo, it is an ADR requirement.

Gav 08-27-2013 08:11 PM

Didn't you need to have one Sambo?

dhs.buckley 08-27-2013 08:13 PM

why would you want a lockable cap? i would be more worried about the car being stolen rather than the fuel in it.
python has this one available with filler neck for unleaded $435.00
no lock though.

Gave if it's an ADR then of course I needed to have it. Sometimes you forget all the small details over the years.

Gav 08-27-2013 10:34 PM

I thought that given it is an ADR that related to an issue that harked back to the days where leaded petrol was still available, that perhaps it had been abolished for ICV's.
I was not insinuating that you had done anything dodgy.

stephen low 08-27-2013 11:28 PM

Think I too bought from Snaketails.

Certainly got a made up item with the lockable cap on it and the right size orifice to restrict pump nozzles.

Would agree though that this may now be an abolished ADR as not required.

Can anyone answer that question?

Don't we have an exemption for this out-dated requirement? I have never had anyone ask me for one and I have never supplied them so means it has been phased out for more than 5 years. I certainly thought it was no longer required.

The fuel filler restrictor requirement is in one of the clauses in our emissions ADR(37/01) as there was still leaded fuel around back when this ADR was current.

Even the RAWS(jap import compliance shops) don't fit fuel filler inlet restrictors to ADR 37/01 applicable vehicles. They have an exemption for it.

That precedent should be a good enough argument with an engineer/transport department to lift the requirement if anyone still asks for it.

just dreamin 08-28-2013 05:57 AM

That requirement was abolished in SA after super petrol was no longer available as was the requirement to have the "unleaded only" sticker on the cap. Don't know about the rest of the country though.

Modena 08-28-2013 06:10 AM

ok it never occurred to me that this may no longer apply, but thanks for pointing it out and it seems to be the case; this is from the infrastructure.gov ADR's;

ADR 41—Mandatory Operation on Unleaded Petrol

The function of this Australian Design Rule is to require vehicles to be manufactured to operate on ‘Unleaded petrol’ and have certain associated features.

/00—This standard ceased to have effect for new vehicles as from 13 February 2001.

and I also looked up ADR 79 Emission Control for Light Vehicles, which has no mention of a restrictor. The requirement for the label is however still in force, section 5.1.3.2.2. from ADR 79 reads;

The vehicle is conspicuously, legibly and indelibly marked with the symbol
for unleaded petrol, specified in ISO 2575:1982, in a position immediately
visible to a person filling the petrol tank. Additional markings are permitted

thanks all

The restrictor with the 'flappy bit' inside is to stop evaporative emissions and forces the air purged from your tank when you fill into the charcoal canister or in the event that you forget to install the correct cap, prevents a lot of lost hydrocarbons too. It's still in all of the current emissions ADRs - in NSW you are tested to ADR 37/01 limits, but still need to comply with the rest of the current ADR (79/..)

The details for evaporative emissions are pretty in depth, and are in volume 2 of the ADRs listed on the infrastructure website. Since the mass manufacturers use this to eliminate the evaporative emissions, although you could try to argue against it, it is still a requirement to control your evaporative emissions. Not fitting one is the same as having open crankcase vents - it's just not allowed.

One doesn't cost much (try Europa spares in the UK, or car builder solutions - they've got ones for £35 or so that will do the job, and fit inside a Le Mans style filler).

Wouldn't the fuel filler cap fulfil the same purpose of preventing evaporation of hydrocarbons?

My 2010 Volkswagen doesn't have any stickers saying unleaded only so that's not mandatory, at least for imports.

The flap is there to reduce emissions when refueling. The hole for the nozzel is a pretty close fit so when refueling not a lot of hydrocarbons escape. When you pull the nozzel the flap closes to keep vapors in while you screw the cap on. The EPA regulates emissions at fuel stations too.

That's my understanding.

Never mind the fuel that runs out of the nozzle when you pull it out of the tank. No matter how much I shake it I always get a few drips!

David Hodgson 08-28-2013 03:00 PM

Keep it to no more than three shakes Sambo, don't want you to be accussed of anything else ;)

Treeve 08-29-2013 03:44 AM

have you tried wiping it on the curtains?

Zedn 08-30-2013 03:14 AM

Treeve, are you sure about that requirement.

Not the curtains, but the flap?

Neither of my late model Mitsubishis have it. Newest being 2012 model ASX.
