New tyres advice??
Hi All,
With the new cobra on the way I've started looking at a new tyre set. I'm set on the BF Goodrich Radial T/A type. I love the classic/racing/muscle look of them and had the all terrains on the ol' four runner years ago and loved them. Anybody have these and like to add their 2c or any other advice? Also thinking of going different sizes for front and back, ie 205 upfront and 255 or 275 on rear depending on the space of the wheel cavity. Thoughts/advice? Thanks |
Run away from the BFGs and don't look back! Or better yet, spit on the road and watch them spin!
Much better functioning tyres available...if looks are all you want, go ahead. If actual traction and grip are a concern, look elsewhere. |
Chook, do a search and you will find plenty of opinions in T/As.
I know a few guys up here who combined round-abouts, greasy road and enthusiasm resulted in unwelcome cuddles with guard rails. Just be aware... Spookypt |

I would not go past the Khumo KU36's
Great price, loads of sizes and they have loads of grip. Plenty of people will agree I'm sure. |
Congrats on the Cobra. Saw it on carsales. Looked like a good buy. From what I heard it was the display car for the cobra shop

In 15" we use Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T as an entry level tyre. You can purchase them locally in Australia for a good price. It is not worth importing them. Full set of S/T tyres(245 front, 295 rear) delivered to your door for less than $1000.
Best 15" tyre in my opinion is Avon CR6ZZ, but at a price premium. |
I have bf ta 255 on the front and bf euro ta 305 on the back, they look good, but that's where it ends, very scary on a slighty damp road. Forgot to add they are wearing well nearly 10, 000klm and plenty of tread left on back and front

I'd concur with Craig's comment that the Avons are the best gripping road legal 15" tyres you can get but when I priced them for all four at around $600 per corner I took a hold on buying a set.
Look at the options available on Tire Rack in the US as I bought a set of four firehawk tyres 295's rear and 245's front for less than $1000 delivered. Have to admit I don't really know how these tyres will grip but I do know they are better than the BFG's. I did want a matching tyre set front and back, and given I wanted 295 rears, the options are limited and even the Yoki 352's I think are no longer available. Good luck with the search. Slo |
Me three on Craig's comments re the Avons. Gordon Leven at Emu Plains has the Avons, a pair of 245's will cost you $900 inclusive. Chook I've got a couple of near new MT ET street radials 255 60R 15 that I'll let go at $100 each, they cost me $302 each at Rocket. PM if you're interested. They hook up real well in the dry but so do the Avons in wet and dry!

Hey Dave, what sizes are the Billboards? I know they'll be in inches but i can convert.
Chook, I don't know how well a 245 will fit in the front of a DRB - its a big tyre, but you will want bigger than a 205 up front. What sizes are on there now? Going bigger could mean a rim change as well - keep that in mind. |

Thanks David - I think 205s are on there at the moment, including rear - car arrives this week. They look like cheese cutters at the moment! Going to a tyre fitter as soon as it arrives to see what I can and can't do on the rims. Driving there on trade plates, to get the tyres, to get the pink slip, to get the rta driving permit to get it engineered to get it registered!!!! |

Even though the Avons are pricey, you are driving an expensive, light, and powerful car. I went with them because I didn't want to spend all this money and effort only to cut costs where it matters most. The Billboards are good tires and really cool looking, but they aren't DOT approved and I didn't want to take the chance that I wouldn't be covered in case of an accident.
