New 331 Windsor Build
G'day fellas;
A few pictures of the new engine currently in progress for anyone interested. Has been a long time coming, but starting to make some progress. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMG_0638.jpeg Its a Dart block with Scat internals to 331ci. Heads are RHS matched with a FAST 4 barrel throttle body set up. Hoping for 500bhp but we will see when it hits the Dyno later on. Fair question Towmaster, We could have gone to 347, but my engine builder felt this was the best combo for what I told him what I wanted from the car. I believe he wants it to turn pretty hard and the rod angle ratio required a little less worry over the long term. He is also confident of making the power with it, and it helps he is a friend and I trust his judgement as he screws these things together for a living. I know whatever he does it will all work together and that should make it a pretty handy engine.
I am very lucky to have a few mates at FPR, so when they talk, I do the listening and shut up. That is why its taking time to complete, the demands on his time at work are very heavy. Cheers Chris L |

331's don't have all the oil burning issues 347's have.

Thanks for the replies fellas, good to hear others that are happy with their combinations also.
One thing I will say is I'm not 100% if we ended up going the Fast Injection set up, it was some time ago but I have a suspicion we may have gone for a Victor Jnr and Edelbrock throttle body for the top. I know we got hold of a Milodin Road race pan, lightweight yella terra flywheel, and the cam has 588 lift, there are boxes of **** everywhere so I will get some specs and post them up. I should have taken more notice but was in a state of 'bling' shock and he was very busy at the time. He has built some very handy engines including last years Bathurst winner. The biggest reason I went there is I just want this thing to all work together as a combination and last. All the little things these guys know about these engines adds up and I really wanted that knowledge in this thing. Sometimes you just get a sum of parts put together and expectations fall short, we should be able to avoid that with this engine. It doesn't have the best of everything in it, but the whole deal will compliment itself. Cheers Chris L |
Very happy with my 347ci also.
Some people put big motors in these cars which look great standing still, but sound like everyday cars and you can't put the power to the ground anyway. Each to their own. I like the old school windsor motors, they have that cammy feeling to them, sound great, vibrate and give you that feeling of what the Cobra is all about. Just my 2c worth. I've got the same deck DART block but with a bored out 4.155 bore that equates to 369 cubes. Thirty cubic inches is a lot of torque to give up. I run a hydraulic roller cam that I spin to 7,000 and it makes about 475 rwhp with a truck load of torque from about 2500 rpm. No oiling issues for me.....

Most if not all the oil consumption problems are caused by incorrect oil ring fitment.
Ive pulled several apart to find the support rail above the oil ring & the bottom rail therefore free to flutter all over the place when it arrives over the pin bore & one was a classic- it also had the expander segment overlapped, therefore no rail loading & to make matters worse the expander 'humps' were doing a nice job of grooving the bore... new OS set of pistons & a next size bore for that one! Never ceases to amaze me how many dummies there are out there...some of them actually hold down jobs in reco shops & yet a couple of weeks later they will be propped up at their local watering hole being an 'expert' when someone else is complaining about a similar issue.. |

What cam specs are you planning on using. I love the high reving 331 engine. Nothing better than the sound of 7500- 8000 rpms tickling your ears. |
