Open Speed limit in NT trial
Open speed limit trials to begin in NT
Sounds like a good idea. I'm all for increasing speed limits outside the city's limits, between country towns.
Now don't go ruining it for everyone by driving like a Victorian city slicker
Sorry lads, but having driven plenty of kms in just about every state, country and city. Most city drivers in Victoria have NO understanding how to drive with any decency or common courtesy. Despite the fact they ALL think they are Brocky's brother or sisterI
...and review mirrors are NOT for your make-up!

Will only take one idiot to stuff it up, and we all know there are plenty off them. Hope I'm wrong.

Makes sense on those long, open stretches of road. Until...
What are they feeding those things?

I wonder what's the difference between hitting a roo at 100km/h vs say 150km/h? I figure either way its carnage!
That roo of yours Sambo looks like it's been benching your mate's panel van .

About 10 years ago a few of my mates went on a surfing safari over to WA in a couple of HQ/HJ panel vans. Hearing about the roo problem they made their own bull bars from something like 50x50 RHS, welded straight to the chassis rails. A big roo was eventually collected at high speed - the bull bar didn't give but the chassis was bent! Apparently they ate well that night.
One of the vans featured on the back of a CD they recorded during that era. Those were the days!

this is what you need, this is my old rare 5 litre XH ute from years ago, the roos bounced off it with out bending anything, the bullbar was actually called a "Hopper Knocker"

Dimis, how can you say that about Melb drivers? You should come to Adelaide and join the queue at peak hour to find some of our best drivers. Here everyone owns the road in front of them and you cannot trespass on their patch.
At least in Melb you can change lanes after indicating (not allowed in Adelaide) and most of the Vics seem to know what the speed limit is at any given time.
Ours can be 25,40,50,60,70,80,90,100,110 kmh and if no sign states otherwise it becomes 50kmh. ps Bob Bozzet used to fit a bulbar and towbar to his cobra to go to West Wyalong for the nationals.

You guys frigging crack me up. So is there no limit on the road at all? Is it busy road at night. sounds like a good place to shut down a section for a high speed run.

It's literally a road that runs through the middle of Australia.... I would say there would be very little traffic at midnight... You wouldn't need to shut the road down.

I expect you wouldn't need roo bars on the cobra; their lower hind legs are pretty skinny and the cobra should slide right under the rest of him! :-)

Hey all. I haven't bothered yet (I was driving before limits where imposed)
There are a few "fears" up this way, dont get me wrong, we all want the open limits, but it has now been 7 years since they set the 130 limit, so there are plenty of young drivers out there who have not gone much faster than 130, these drivers worry me.
Also the radio and police have made it very clear that you still can get fined for driving too fast (for the conditions) and if they deem you are "racing". so if any groups of cars may get pulled up.
An open speed limit means driving at a speed that you feel safe at, not going as fast as you can.
All it will take is 1 fatality, (no matter weather speeding, drinking, no belts, unroadworthy car) and the Gov will say "we tried, but its too dangerous"
As for driving fast at night, I don't even do 100 at night out here.
Too many Roos, Cows, Camels, Emus, Eagles.
But in a few weeks when it cools down a bit, I dare say I will go up to Aileron to get a some milk.

Sounds like a US Navy obstacle course. lol Upstate New york(USA) use to have a speed limit of 65mph then lowered to national speed limit. These were back country roads and you could be cruising with little warning into a curve that wasn't engineered for that speed. Oh and then the Amish pulling their wagons with horses.
I guess that 130 is about 80mph in the states. If the road is safe I don't see a problem for an experienced driver going higher for brief moments.

Hey Boxhead what does the guage read. I can sort of read it but the bottom number seems to be larger than it should. Wish I had a picture of a turbo 512 boxer when I pegged the speedo at 330 the limit. Here's a cool pic of the dash of the compton Cobra I was writing about.

Top one says 3700 bottom one says 198
It actually slows down a little in 6th, as the gearing is too tall for the power I have.
When I say slows down more accurate might be "It doesn't increase as fast"
