New class for the Nationals
Hi everyone,
Due to some great support from the NSW Nationals committee this years Nationals will see the debut of a new racing class, class 7. The class will be a controlled tyre class using the Khumo KU 36 tyre. It will be open to street registered cobras with engine capacity up to 7ltrs. I think this will be a great opportunity to create some close racing while reducing costs, improving safety, reducing fatigue on the cars and having a load of fun too. Who is going to join us? Gav |
Really excited about this class and a great idea. Lots of cars already, running this tyre. Great for those guys not wanting to go 1:06 and still be competitive.
Brilliant idea. :) |
I think this is a great idea. A lot of the arguments I hear around classing at the various events revolves around tyres. They have one of the biggest impacts on lap times. There is usually a lot of grumbling around R spec tyres and what is a street tyre and what's a race tyre. Taking away that factor and leveling up the playing field sounds like a good idea. We have enough disparity in other areas with motor choice, chassis design, driving skill and testicle size.
The KU36 is also a good all rounder tyre for those that don't want the extra expense of swapping race tyrs and road tyres. It may also give us some leverage with the local supplier to get some tyres at a decent price without having to resort to importing them privately. |
This is great idea. I know not many Cobra's run 18's at the moment, but this tyre tops out at 275 wide in an 18. Just saying.
|
There was never going to be a tyre that suited every application, but given the variety of sizes and the existing popularity of the Khumo it was a logical choice.
|
Wazza will be happy with this, he has KU36 tyres on his grey 7 litre beast...
|
I thought Jo had banned the new car from track duties?
|
Waz was one of the many people I thought would be keen.
|
With the red racer retired perhaps the new beast will get to stretch its cubes in anger. It would be awesome to see it getting a tickle up!
|
I'm in, just bedded in a new set of KU36's at ShelbyFest 2014 - great idea to have a "Control tyre" type approach to level the playing field a bit.
cheers Gregg |
Sounds like I'm the right chap for that class.....
Would this class be exempt from "King Cobra"? Cheers, Warren |
No it won't.
However, you probably won't be as fast in the sprints so that may hinder your chances. But given there will probably be no real disadvantage in the hill climb, drags and slalom you could still care well in the overall points. |
No doubt about it, there could possibly be a new King Cobra this year. The only previous King that could be running(in an eligible car) will be Keith Baxter..
|
Don't forget Sneaky (John White)....
That AP beast should be ready by then ! |

That being said Kumho sales over the last 2-3 months are down +/- 50% at the wholesale level at the moment so there could well be some leverage to be had. This info is just for a general heads up for everyone-nothing more, nothing less, so don't take me to task on it please Rog |
I run this tyre on my Cobra now. A good tyre for the road after you get a bit of heat into them. I have the 315 rear end size and think it looks dam good in the guard.
Could be an interesting addition to the event as my car isn't an out and out race car as it's more a tourer. |

I run the 315's on my CR Cobra and they fit (fill) just nicely in the guards. FYI: I purchased 2x 245/45/17 and 2 x 315/35/17 recently on fleabay for $1000 delivered to my door. Then just $25 for fitting and balancing from my local tyre guy. I looked into oseas option and it was probably going to be more expensive as I would have gone over the $1000 mark and paid duty and GST etc. PM me anyone who want to know where to get them. I have in the past used my local tyre guy but he struggled to get the 315's. cheers Gregg |

Agreed. Worth noting also that these tyres can be a bit slippery when cold. Especially if the road is a little damp. Once warm though, they are great. Good price too. Geof |
Bloody hell, thought i might have a shot at this one but looks like its going to be very popular. I think the fastest Wakefield cobra lap on these tyres is in the 1:10's.
