Shipping parts from the USA & AUSFTA
Anyone shipped parts from the US lately.
I need some help and clarification.
I'm trying to workout what duties I'm liable for.
The customs website seemingly comprehensive, but I hoping I could get some assistance.
Does an engine built from parts made in the USA, by a nice US gent qualify under AUSFTA?
If I understand it correctly... It's 0% GST as of 1/1/2014?
That can't be right... Or is it?
Parts land next week, so I'm trying to wrap my tiny mind around the pick up process.
Any and all help welcome.
Thx

Hi I recently imported gear from the US:
I shipped a crate motor + Parts from the USA parts and thee is definitely GST on > $1000. There is less duty on USA items. For a spend of 19k USD there was 3400 AUD import duty fee including GST and custom clearance fees etc. There may be a fee for leaving USA as well of about $300.
So yes they get you again...

Thanks.
I went back and re-read.
Embarrassingly my reading-comprehension skills need refining.
It's 0% duty as of 1/1/2014.
I still pay 10% GST, so yeah, it seems I'll be adding a few xtra $k to the government's coffers.
Your post seems to confirm similar experience

GST all the way mate and some items still attract duty also. My computer copped it on both fronts.

Today: 1 US Dollar equals 1.07 Australian Dollar
If that is the case, then why does your AUD go further over here than ours does over there? Seems purchase power should be similar, but my experience suggests otherwise.
Cheers, Dale

Volume, Dale. And isolation. We just don't have the benefit of bulk purchasing, being a country of only 23million peeps.
Plus we are talking largely about stuff manufactured in US or for US. So by the time all that teat stuff lands here, we get slugged extra for it.
And, as far as volume goes, local retailers and distributor can't afford to carry the range you have over there either. Especially in specialist or boutique markets that we are talking about here.
So, the Internet is our friend.
