Welding courses, etc
With the pending arrival of my kit, plus the recent acquisition of a hobby farm, I find myself needing (wanting) to weld stuff!
I borrow my brothers inverter arc welder, and make some things stick but I'm pretty cr@p at it! I was thinking I'd like to do a short night or weekend course. As much for interest as anything. And probably with mig, tig, arc and maybe oxy too. My question I'll put out there is: does anyone have recommendations or suggestions on the type of courses or institutions they've had experience with and they could recommend? Clearly Melbourne based, and ideally between South Melbourne (work) and north eastern suburbs (home). |
try your local tafe they sometimes do welding courses

Guy, I'm sure Holmesglen do these coarses.
Once you learn arc welding it is quite an easy progression to mig, tig and oxy but check what training is available. Cheers Russell |

I did a TAFE introduction to welding course at Holmesglen a few years Back. I think it was officially called Hobby Welding, it was a great introduction. The next step after this was to specialise in arc/tig/mig and so on. I reckon just buy a welder, get some scrap metal and use YouTube. Stiffy |

I did a TAFE MIG welding course years ago. It was a DOL certification course back then. They let me attend despite not being in the industry. I wasn't allowed to get the certificate at the end of this because I wasn't a professional welder but the instruction and experience was very good.
These days I get a lot good info from Jodie at Welding tips and tricks. This is a great YouTube channel. Welding tips and tricks I agree with Stiffy. Practice makes perfect. Get a welder and give it a go on some scrap. Cheers |
the best thing I did was get rid of my cheap Chinese ebay mig and buy a lincon 180 c my welds straight off were a lot better .ive been arc welding for yrs my old man was a boiler maker and I could weld pretty good by the time I was 12 with the stick but we never had a mig at home till I bought my own .
my engine builder has a tig and I had a go welding some alloy a couple of weeks ago while it stuck it didn't look pretty and I would def like to learn to use it better .like the others have said just grab some scrap and practice don't get ya mrs to watch the power meter spin while ya welding tho :-) |

Ha! Jody was a coworker of mine at Delta Airlines. He ran the welding school and certified our welders. His videos do get around. :cool:

There can be a huge difference in what a novice welder THINKS is a good weld and how expert would grade the weld. The big problem with self-taught is that it usually includes self-assessment. I recommend that you do a TAFE course if for no other reason than to know how to assess the quality of your weld. "She was only a welder's daughter but she had acetylene tips" . |
Enrolled at NMIT. Course starts next Monday. Got new overalls for my birthday!
Introduction to arc, mig and oxy acetylene. 8 weeks x 4 hrs. I'm so excited... (which is a bit sad really!) |

The TAFE course you have enrolled in will be a great start, then practice, practice, practice at home!
Welding is like riding a bike, you won't forget how to do it but you'll be a bit wobbly to begin with if you haven't done it for a while! |

I no its not welding but ive been having fun playing with a little plasma cutter the last few days that a friend lend me . its just a cheapie ebay one but hell it works great I think I will buy one my shed is screaming out for one :-)

My first welds!
