Post Mortem

Hi all,
After a lengthy wait I finally pulled the engine from my car to assess the damage from Shelbyfest.

Well as I thought it aint real pretty in there, the #1&2 conrod big ends are blue as is the crank on that journal :(

Not happy Jan...

Be warned pro Ford comments will be met with profanity.

sambo 06-16-2014 11:28 PM

Sorry to hear Gav. New crank and rods or could it be worse than that?

Gav 06-16-2014 11:43 PM

I was hoping to just be bearings and maybe a couple of rods.
I won't know until everything gets measured to check for damage.

Throwing another taxi motor in for the short term is looking good!

deano59 06-16-2014 11:45 PM

ouch that's gotta hurt my engine builder had a v8 super car crank in his shop the other week that was a pretty shade of blue not sure if he repaired it or not it was sitting next to the crank grinder last I saw it may be in the bin now lol

Whilst sympathetic to your pain Gav..........the question has to be asked, how often does one stick their chin out only to have it whacked when the product fails to meet expectation ? The colour of your crank is trying to tell you something........... come across and all will be good. Aluminator XS is your friend, so please............help yourself and be happy !
Good luck with the path you take regardless mate.

Cheers

Hopefully just bearings Gav. Any idea what caused it - dodgy oil pump, starvation?

PSYCHO 06-17-2014 04:18 AM

Sorry to hear this GAV the last time I heard of a LS motor suffering that type of damage was in my sons Maloo after he gave it a hard time, when we pulled it down I found some thread tape in the crank oil journal which none of us had any idea where it came from maybe a oil temp switch or something luckily a regrind and new bearings fixed it but a whole lot of work at the end of the day. Hope it all goes well for you and that its not to terminal.

Gav 06-17-2014 05:02 AM

Definitely oil starvation.
Improving the oil system or slowing down is what I am going to need to do next :)

Wazza 06-17-2014 05:32 AM

I know where there is a big pile of these....

I think I'll need a new home too if I buy one ;)

blykins 06-17-2014 08:22 AM

I don't have a ton of LS experience, but it seems like a lot of them have oiling issues to the rod bearings. Last one I built was a 402 cubic inch road race engine for a guy. The core he brought me was an LS2 core and it had 2 spun rod bearings.

Crank probably needs to be reground, rods need to be replaced. Throw some new bearings in it, a good oil pump and pickup, and let her roll.

If you blued the journal(s) and depending on how deep the OEM nitriding penetrated, you may also need to renitride the crank after grinding. For the price of a new crank, especially if the old journals have been blued, you might just be better off with new.

Wet sump oiling systems range from poor to better than average. To get to the better than average threshold you end up spending money. If you do nothing to your oiling system this failure will reoccur. With the availability of OEM dry sump technology on the LS7 engines why not use the best priced, best performing pieces from the factory and the aftermarket and build your own dry sump system for the engine — it will serve you much better.

I should probably add that I had improved the oiling system prior to this happening.
It has a high volume oil pump, a windowed or road race sump and is over filled for track duty.
Winton is a hard track on engines as many of us that have trashed something going around the sweeper.
If I am going to continue to race I will need to do something like dry sumping so it won't happen again no matter how hard it is thrown through corners.

olddog 06-17-2014 05:28 PM

I was pretty sure the LS pump was in the front of the engine, and assumed the front of the engine would get oil first. Wrong! A quick internet search showed that the pump is indeed in the front of the engine, but the front mains are the last thing to get oiled. They route the oil to the back of the engine, through the filter, and then up to the cam bearings. The oil then works its way to the mains, one at a time, until it gets to the front of the engine.

What a crappy oil design! You may want to do some searches for oiling improvements for that engine. It is a very popular engine. I have to believe that someone racing this engine has came up with some oil routing improvements.

Gav 06-17-2014 05:38 PM

Something has to be oiled last you know :)
The C5Rs at LeMans are dry sump with no major other changes.
Works for them.
