Finally bought a Cobra
After years of wanting I have taken the plunge and bought a Cobra
Car is an RMC chassis number 6T9 P01 WA1 R1 AAK001 rego COBRA 1 (Western Australia).
1. Does anybody know how to read the chassis numbers? Seems like a lot of "1s" in there so I assume this is an early car?
2. The idle air control valve on the inlet manifold is blanked off (5.0 liter HO) making cold start troublesome, car is running a wolf 3d ecu, does this ecu have a feed for the valve?
3. Where can I buy a roll hoop for this chassis? RMC have nothing off the shelf?
4. How can I tune out the bump steer?
5. Where is the best place to buy low back seats with removable head rests?
Lots of questions I know but I am keen to learn and do the car credit.

There'll be lots of other guys who'll jump in and provide answers to your questions Sparky, but let me say congratulations on buying a car with a lot of Aussie heritage, and a warm welcome to the forum.

The 17 digit VIN for one of my fords reads 6FPAAAJGSW5Exxxxx.
6FPAAA means Ford.
JG means manufacturing plant- in this case Broadmeadows.
SW means body style- in this case Sedan.
5 means year of manufacture- in this case 2005.
E means the month code of manufacture- in this case November.
xxxxx means the individual number of the vehicle.
Being a bright spark(y), that should help you work out some of your VIN.
Cheers

And,
I bought two seats with removable rests from a mob in Adelaide about 5 years ago. Dunno if they are still going. An engineering shop should be able to help with a roll bar and brackets etc. made just for you out of steam pipe and stuff.

I would suggest giving Aussie Mike a call or message regarding your roll bar requirements. From memory he has a bender and mandrels and as people will attest here, his work is excellent.
Goodluck and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase.
A number of RMC guys have lowered their steering racks to dial out a but of bump steer.
One thing you'll want to check is whether you still have the original upper a-arm mounting plate. The design on these wasn't too flash and there were some breakages. RMC made a strengthening plate but weren't too vocal about making them available to all current cars.
Regarding VIN numbers, it's all a mystery to me. I had a 1991 Anaconda (which was the RMC marketed under another name in Queensland). It was 6J9PO1000L2DV....
Another Cobra I first registered in 2002 was 6T9P01AAA30AAB.... Not sure how this identifies year or body style sorry.
Post up some pics when you have a chance!

That's the one Albanycobra, I didn't see it on gumtree, turned out that it was owned by a friend of a friend and the topic came up in conversation - one of those meant to be moments!

I am sure there is a rythem to the VIN numbers when issued by authoritise.
But my understanding is as follows.
6T9 P01 WA1 R1 AAK001
6T9 seems to be uniform
P01 is Passenger car 2001
WA1 is Western Australia issue (possably first one for the year)
R1 ?
AAK001 is the issue sequence 001 issued.

I rang MVR in Darwin today and asked about de-coding VINs. The Inspector wasn't sure how the system worked.
He said under the Road Vehicle Certification System it was on the National database.
He asked me for the VIN of the vehicle. I said I didn't have it.
He said they input the VIN and press a "de-code" button and all the info. comes up.
I reckon if you ring your WA MVR Office you'll get the info. you want.
Cheers

Yes, the ICV VINs for all states and territories are all run from NSW. I've got an email from the VINs department which defines how they are worked out. The statement above is mostly correct, with some additional information:
6T9 is recognition of an Australian ICV VIN.
I'll rummage around for the rest of the detail they gave me if I remember when I'm off night shift.

Yep, they are just letters and numbers in some sort of code until you isolate each part, then you get it.
6T9
Sarcastic bastards in the Government, me thinks!
p.s. I'm not posting a picture to illustrate the point.
