pulley set ups
hi all
just wondering how the guys running ls engines are setting up there engine pulleys once you take off the air con and power steering what do you use to connect it all together again ? is there a belt /pulley kit for it . ive searched using the search function with no luck any pictures would help as well. cheers dean |
Hi Dean,
I'm planning to install an L98 when I get my act together and buy a kit. I am still undecided whether to keep the power steering in place. The air con runs its own belt so not a problem. You can get one made to size but I'd also be interested if there is an off-the-shelf belt which by passes air con and power steering. What do people think about keeping power steering? Is it necessary? I am itching to get up to visit Craig at AP.......hopefully in a few weeks. Cheers Sam |
Deano, on Windsor you will want to run a standard rotation water pump. Then I would recommend a billet v belt pulley set. You would have seen them on all the windsor installs in our shop. You can do your own solution or we sell them as an option. Just make sure you get alternator clearance to chassis.
In my opinion Power Steering is not necessary on a PACE 427. Even if you want your wife to drive it. We went to a lot of work in this area. We have a nice fast responsive steering, that is light and has a stellar turning circle. We do offer electric power steering as an option, but that is mainly recommended for people with a disability. |
Mine just has a single gilmer drive running the water pump & alternator, no need for power steering in the python, seems to handle 6500rpm

I think you will be impressed with what you see at the factory cheers dean |
There is a aftermarket conventional rotation water pump available for LS motors now. You could run a simple setup like mine and use your alternator mount as the belt tensioner.

Or...
Make an idler pulley In place of the power steer pump pulley and run everything else as is. |

If it was me, and I was having a build with a LS motor now, I would be using either the clockwise rotation Stewart water pump, or the Edlebrock 8895 (for memory) and a simple crank, water pump, alt pulley set up.

We just run factory pulley setup for GM engines. You can just bolt on a later VF idler pulley & bracket where the power steering pump goes and get the correct belt size. VF Commodore are electric power steer, so no pump. But if you want to get more creative, swap over to a standard rotation water pump. |
Yep, standard rotation pump looks the best in my opinion. Lots more options available now.

Yep, home made pulleys and brackets and a home made standard rotation water pump long before the aftermarket ones became available. It was a good fun project and seemed to work pretty good. I had no cooling issues giving it a hard run at Winton.
It's been modified a bit since then. The addition of a Power steering pump changed things a bit. I now have the Alternator running off it's own 4 rib belt using the Aircon pulley grooves on the crank. http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/...psd0e8fa8a.jpg The PS pump and water pump run off the 6 rib belt with a separate tensioner which I cant seem to find a decent pic of. Cheers |
Deano I have an L98 in my Cobra with p/steering but no aircon. I have all the Holden part numbers and a diagram if you're interested, just send me your email address.
The aircon runs on a second belt so leave that out of the equation. For the other parts just find a VZ/VE wreck and grab the alternator bracket and the p/steering bracket even if you're not running the pump. It'll make it easier to fit an idler pulley in place of the pump. By the way the Commodore power steering works a treat with a VK C'dore rack in my Cobra. Just beware of HSV models which have the LS3 - roughly 30mm different offset so you need all brackets & accessories from the LS3 if you go down that path. You can tell by comparing the depth of the "spokes" on the balancers. You'll also need the factory tensioner. I'd buy it new from Holden to make sure it's a good one. Here's the best photo I could find of my setup. Bit hard to see. http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps5d5d0844.jpg |
