Hi Modena.
10MM is ridiculously thick. You can easily reduce that down to 1/8" or 3MM more than safely. Does your body have core reinforcement under the cowl?
You can also use T nuts. They come in various sizes and depths.
You will need to bore the backside of the hole a little larger, but
not too much surgery.
