Default Australian Manufactures - Shelby Cobra

Hello,

I'm in the market for a seriously nice Shelby Cobra.

I have no experience with Cobras so I'm sorry I can't be a bit more specific but I have a background in car racing.

That being said I'm really just after something that looks and sounds terrific, and handles well. In short, I'd like a top quality Shelby Cobra (possibly
like you guys, it's been a dream of mine to have a Cobra even since I was a young kid)

I may take it to the odd track day for a blast but really the key features I'm looking for is;

- very high quality build (interior and exterior)
- something that handles well
- something that is mega loud
- zero hassles (with the car or getting it into and registered in Australia)
- a car that looks completely unique (either the one I sent you in this email or the one below)
- some sort of anti-theft device so the friggen thing doesn't get stolen
- an authentic feel (especially in the interior)

If anyone is happy to recommend an Australian manufacture who they feel would be a match for my expectations that would be mega appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Big Dog

Welcome to the forum Big Dog.

Now just sit back and await the torrent of replies.

And keep in mind the initials AP ....

Anti theft device will have to be able to stop a flatbed truck, because I wouldn't be trying to drive one away.

Do you want to build yourself or a turn key car?

For a turn key car it's hard to go past a Superformance. Top quality build and ticks all of the boxes you have outlined.

The local distributor is LJ's Performance Sports Cars down here in Melbourne.

Here's some pics of LJ's shop and some of the cars from a recent open day

It's only money Ash. Besides, asking price (perceived value) and actual price paid are often completely different animals. I'd be doubtful the fella that buys that car would hang around on this forum but you never know.

I reckon it fits the shopping list pretty good.

- very high quality build (interior and exterior) I can only assume so based on the $'s being asked.
- something that handles well. Probably doubtful.
- something that is mega loud. Possibly but then if its over 93 odd DBA it wont pass rego etc.
- zero hassles (with the car or getting it into and registered in Australia) I'm still laughing! But PM Damage as he's done many things many have been unable to do.
- a car that looks completely unique (either the one I sent you in this email or the one below). They all look different in their own way.
- some sort of anti-theft device so the friggen thing doesn't get stolen. Who'd wanna steal one?
- an authentic feel (especially in the interior) Yep it should do that.

"If anyone is happy to recommend an Australian manufacture who they feel would be a match for my expectations that would be mega appreciated."
Often ones expectation breeds contempt so always dangerous on that front. Talk to the usual suspects and drawer your own conclusions. Plenty of info here on line just use the search button for heaps of banter on the few out there doing things. In Oz you have Cobra Kits, AP, Factory 5, RMC, Superformance, DRB, Classic Revival, Backdraft plus a fair few others. Some of these guys are entering into the Oz Cobra Market and others are exiting.

Research is your friend and ask around your local Cobra community for feedback and advice. There's a strong following on this forum for a few of the manufacturers mentioned above but like anything just do your research and don't rush!

Welcome...

Budget will determine everything... Please elaborate...

Everything in a replica is a compromise, how far one is willing to compromise on each point is the devil in the detail.

PS - I notice you are in Victoria - you might want to get to a club meet to check some out.

Why do you want an Australian manufacturer?

Based on what you have asked for, for me this is easy;

if your budget is 200+ get a Kirkham
if your budget is 100+ get a Superformance
under 100, you're building your own from the previously mentioned kits, and then it will be what you make of it rather than what you paid for it.

If I was to do all again ....

And it had to be an Australian kit ,

I would buy an AP minus body and then purchase a alloy body from the states for it !

Other wise buy a Kirkham or a Shelby Continuation alloy bodied .

Good luck ,

Soul.

If I had to do it again, and could afford it, it would be a Kirkham billet job a la Larry Ellison... but with the side pipes!

Personally I think you should do your own research and make your own mind up! Talk to the manufacturers because most people on here are bias to a particular make, style, power plant etc.
I chose what I thought to be the best one for me taking a lot of factors into consideration except for overall cost. (within reason) I did that on the last Cobra I built and was never happy with it.

Good luck!

Oh, I never even considered an alloy body! With me it would look like a golf ball in no time!

I think craig mentioned the alloy body was about a 20 grand upgrade that's a lot of recycled coke cans :-)
