A 'King Cobra' and Shelbyfest winning vehicle nonetheless!!!!

Phil is referring to his first Cobra, it is has been featured in street machine, won awards at Summernats, king Cobra, Shelbyfest and the list goes on....
If you are after a well sorted, angry and immaculately presented Cobra this is the one for you.

Well thats interesting Philm put a post on here saying he had a car for sale if my budget was a bit flexible. I sent him a PM saying my budget was a bit flexible for the right car I haven't received a reply as yet so it will be interesting to see what he comes back with. If it is Orphan WOW its just a pity it has an LS3 in it being a Ford man I really want a Ford engine in it. I know that limits my options some what. I have already changed the dream based on the cars available. I initially wanted a 427 with quad 48mm webbers and live rear axel just like the original sadly very few kits or no kits/cars around now have a non IRS rear end. Oh well never mind I can always build the 427 with quad webbers I guess.

Well it depends what he is asking for it but by the sounds of things it would be well worth considering. Sounds like an amazing car hopefully he gets in contact with me.

I think the "budget a bit flexible" might be a bit tongue in cheek, unless of course you are just planning on buying his engine with your 50K? :D

Hi Andrew
Buying or building, Depends on where your interest lies,
Are you particular on what make?
Do you want to enjoy the car and driving it? or building, problem solving and having the satisfaction of doing it yourself?
If you go down the build path, here are just a few thoughts.
Support:
Make sure EVERYONE in your life 100% supports your hobby
Girlfriend, wife, kids, parents, family dog, friends etc. so many projects end up on gumtree because of family get sick and tired of the time and money spent on the hobby.
Make sure you have the time:
It takes time (years) to build on of these cars. It will ALWAYS take longer than what you are told, and if you are depending on outside business to do stuff for you, you will be waiting, waiting and waiting. Their view is, it’s a project car and it can wait.
Have a realistic budget:
Research what things actually cost, what is and what isn’t included in the kit, assumptions cost money. Do you have the tools and equipment necessary?
Again it ALWAYS cost more than what you get told.
Engineering cost, registration and stamp duty cost.
If that doesn’t put you off, you are ready to go.
Or
Find one you like, buy it , drive it …….
Cheers

Hi Kent,
Very wise words i have been thinking about it and what you say is so true. i have come to decision that a the moment I reckon the buys and drive option is the best way for me to go.
Thanks for you thoughts

Might need to do some more research Andrew. Both original 289 an 427 Cobras ran IRS. 289 had transverse leaf springs where as the 427 switch to a coil-over design. No originals ran live axle rear.
You might struggle with the webber equipped 427. The motor will need to meet current emissions rules to pass and that motor won't no matter what you do to it.

Hi Mike,
Ok there u go I could have sworn I read in multiple places they had a live rear end I stand corrected I did know about the the transverse leaf setup on the 289. Yeah I know meeting modern emissions with a Webber setup would be near impossible another reason that got culled from the dream early in the peace.
Althought I believe if you were to get an older car with a carby engine for example. You only need to comply with the emission standards of the year of manufacture, but from what I have heard from Vic roads it a bit of a grey area. I wouldn't like to be the trial case with out some fairly hefty re assurances from Vic roads that it would meet compliance at $700+ ago you don't want it too fail too many times.
Thanks for setting me straight on the rear end.
Cheers Andrew

Did the 427 cobras run a Salisbury Diff similar to the jag setup?

It would need to be an early 80's? build. By '90 when I bought my kit, you needed to be emissions compliant or use gas.

I think the diff center was similar but it was a double wishbone setup with outboard discs.

Mines for sale on carsales. Ford 'K' code 66 Windsor. For about $3,500 you can put on the Webers and it would complete what I never finished off.

Interestingly I called Vic Roads recently about changing from gas back to petrol too see what they said. They didn't ask me the year of the car or anything. They just said all I needed was a letter from a mechanic stating that all the LPG equipment had been removed so they could update their records. I thought this was very strange given how emission controls have progressively tighten in the last 15 yrs.

It is unlikely that you will have been given accurate advice about the compliance aspects on that call.
I am aware of VicRoads requiring a cobra owner to fit a late model efi engine in place of the existing carby engine the car was purchased with (from interstate) - because the date of manufacture did not align with the engine installed (updating the induction was not sufficient). This was after a number of years of rego in Vic.
There are many levels of complication and an ad-hoc call to a customer service at VicRoads will not resolve them.
Good luck with your search.
Have you been in touch with the Vic Club?

Unless of course you lie to the engineer about what the engine is.......
A little birdy told me that is how some unscrupulous person got a certain engine passed.........
Recommendation is that you do it legally because if one idiot brings down the whole industry because of an overstated ego then that would be uncool..... Regardless of how cool the engine is......
Just saying.

That is a great looking car - I'm sure I've seen it a few times and would be crawling all over it if I were in the market.
GLWS.

Hi LoBelly
I have been speaking to one of the blokes from the club about this. I rang Vic Roads and got through to what I thought to the right department. As he had to go and confirm his answer with someone else. So I guess my next question is who do I need to speak to to get a reasonably straight answer as they are few and far between at VicRoads. It defys me how we are supposed to do the right thing if you can't get the right answer from them.
So was the engine swap required to transfer the car to Vic registration from interstate? The reason for asking this is I have also spoken to VicRoads regarding what is required to change over registration from WA to Vic and again I have been told by VicRoads it is just a matter of filling out the forms paying the money and it done. They did say they may need to site the car to confirm the VIN number if it isn't on record with WA. BTW the whole time I made them aware of what the car is.
Very interesting

Maybe get it in writing / email format then I guess you have a case to argue when it comes time to register?

The answer to your question is, a VicRoads ceritifed VASS engineer. Get a VASS engineer to provide you the advice, they do this for a living.
