Neat looking chassis. Looks a lot like a TVR chassis.

I would recommend talking to an engineer in your state.

Cheers

Thanks Treeve
what is involved in the beaming and torsion testing ?
as you we the next person i was going to contact regarding the engineering on this.

It'd help if you put your location in your profile so we can give you relevant pointers / the guys can help out if they're nearby.

The B&T is a prick of a test that takes a fair bit of the day to do properly. My least favourite of all the tests. Check it out in VSB14.

Here's the TVR Chimera chassis as a reference. I reckon the folks at RAM might have got some inspiration from this.

I see the connection Mike, but it might be the other way around. I'm sure the RAM was in production in the 80's.

A bit of googling shows the TVR Chimaera between 1992 and 2003. Also the RAM chassis was designed by F1 and Indy Car designers: David Rendall and Adrian Reynard.

The Butler also uses this type of backbone chassis arrangement

Treeve 08-30-2015 07:39 PM

I do miss my Chim.

sickntwisted 09-07-2015 11:00 PM

Thanks again Treeve
as any pointers would be appreciated as this is my first Cobra build so a bit of a novice.
Although i run my own mechanical repair and fabrication business it still doesn't compare to the experience of some or most of the guys on here that have already done it.
Here is a quick run down of where i am at.
Completely stripped chassis (off to be blasted for a tidy up)
Have been through the complete suspension and rear end and rebuilt or replace anything that needed it (Jag front end, Jag rear end , Jag brakes, MGB steering rack)
Nothing done with engine or gearbox as yet as i am not sure yet as to what I can run. (Any suggestions of what most likely they will allow ?)
Do I need to be in touch with an engineer before i continue with the build ? (Treeve)
Also if anyone has a build manual of a Ram SC that I could buy or get a copy of ,that should help a little.
Thanks in advance for useful comments as I am looking forward to finally becoming a member of the cobra community.
Kind regards Phil

Hi Sicko, definitely talk to an engineer before you start spending big bucks. I believe the chassis on the RAM is strong and most likely to pass the test, but you want to make sure before unloading your wallet on driveline. Ex S.A president Dean Fava has a big block RAM. Just Dreamin might now if he has any factory documents.
There are so many options for engine and g/box. Some have used pretty much stock Boss 5.4's, Coyote 5.0 and LS series variants. Some have changed induction etc on these as well and still passed the IM240 emissions test. So there's a good choice for you.

Oh and don't forget the #1 forum rule: no pic's means it didn't happen. Keep the pics coming.
Cheers Dave

Welcome Phil

Dave and Treeve have given you the most important thing to do at this stage and that is to get the chassis OK'd.

A failure at this point is not fatal - you'll most likely be able to add some steel.

I bought someone's abandoned build and spent a lot of time looking for a build manual, when I eventually got one it turned out the parts were too old to be readily found (e.g. sigma steering column) or the standards had moved on. It did not take long for the build manual to be little more than a curiosity.

At the beginning of the build the engineer I was working with went through all the standards and how to meet them - having this information at the outset is very important and will help you identify your priorities.

Also at the outset, I took my car to the engineer, several guys in our club have had the engineer come to them.

This meant that a lot of the incidentals like door latches etc could be viewed - OK'd and/or tips given e.g. make sure you use grade 8 on that and that the bolt is marked (or similar)

Good luck with your build - Keep us updated

LoBelly

PM me your details and I will send you a copy of the manual.

sickntwisted 09-08-2015 10:37 PM

Thanks guys I will do some chasing around and will be posting a few more pics shortly as the chassis should be back from the blasters any day now and i have done a big tidy up on the body (nearly ready for some primer)
once again I appreciate your input.
Cheers Phil

Since your just up the road from Goulburn, it'd be worth your while coming down to the Nats on October long weekend to have a look at a few, chew some ears off and fill your boots with info.
Wakefield Park Fri 2nd to Sun 4th Oct.

sickntwisted 09-09-2015 11:44 PM

That is definitely happening i am looking forward to seeing some nice cars at Wakefield

just dreamin 09-10-2015 05:20 AM

Phil, David H. mentioned Deans Ram which is located in Adelaide. He brought his car over from England so was able to use the personal import aspect for requirements re rego. His car was engineered by a local who may be able to supply the engineering documents for your chassis.
I will be in Goulburn for the nats staying at the Central Hotel. If you want to catch up I will see Dean before we leave and see what help he can provide to help you. Unfortunately he wont be attending.

sickntwisted 09-10-2015 02:30 PM

Mate that would be so helpful as i spoke to an engineer yesterday and he did say that any documents that i could find on the vehicles specs would make life easier.
Thanks very much for your effort I definitely love to catch up .
regards Phil

Ahh the old work life balance - lol

Too easy to get side tracked by life and over or under do it.

Aussie Mike 09-15-2015 09:41 PM

I'm really enjoying watching this come together too.

Cheers
