I'm not quiet sure about where this body originated from as I bought it about 8 years ago off a guy who was selling it on Ebay for about $4k so I snapped it up and put it away.

Once I started looking at it I realised how badly it was finished, so I have spent the last 6 months (on & off) re-fibreglassing the rear/front clips to get them right, the spider seems OK and the doors and nostril are all good. Needless to say that will be the last one I buy anything unseen...

All of that said, it has a very original look to it - more so than the RF or DRB bodies, however I can't compare to any of the other kits as I have not seen them in the flesh.

Hey Guys,

what do you think about this as an option for my AC Project - Audi A6 4.2L quad cam, 5 valves/cyl and producing 220kw and 400Nm of torque.
I picked this up last week in town and brought it back to the Island to strip it - I'm even contemplating the quattro all wheel drive system, wiring etc etc.. full donor car.
Am I crazy or is this a great opportunity to engineer something completely different into an AC Cobra replica..

P.S. I think I am going to have to fight my 14yr old son for it though; he loves Audi's and loves this one now that he has seen it.**)

Go with the all wheel drive. It's not really necessary, but it's a cool way to draw more attention to your brand when it's finished.
There can't be many AWD Cobras in the world...

Ah yeah, that wasn't quiet my intention. I would make it look like a normal road vehicle so that nobody could tell it was AWD, until it takes off with no wheel spin and then it might twig.. 😊

Aussie Mike 05-21-2016 04:13 AM

I reckon that one probably takes off with no wheel spin either LOL!

Haha, at 1490kg's I agree..

As much as I love seeing something different, I would not use an Audi engine.

Underpowered, not much scope for upgrades and sound crappy.

All wheel drive sounds like fun, perhaps continue with Skyline parts?

Charge up that 4.2 and it will spin.....

My thoughts exactly, twin turbo'd they are not so lazy. Sorry but I'm a forced induction freak..:)
The engine is essentially an early model R8 engine base, without the bigger cams and tuned up to 350KW.. N/A

Jethrow 05-22-2016 05:08 AM

Note in the Audi the engine sits fwd of the front wheels. In the cobra the engine is well behind the front wheels. I think this is a no go ..... (as AWD in any case)

boxhead 05-22-2016 06:32 AM

Probably a Tucker body.

Ah, that's where you under estimate the engineering, I have already worked out how to position the motor rearward of the front wheels and how to transfer the drive back to the front wheels.. It's simple but effective and for now my little secret.. sorry :)

Yeah, I just have to convince my son that he doesn't want the Audi now as I think he has fallen in love with it - he was sitting in it today playing with all the gadgets LOL..

Anyway, I have the 427W sitting there ready to go together, and a 5 speed box so as much as I want this engineering project I think I want the car together for driving sooner rather than later.

Hey, I just started another thread on the actual ICCARS business so hopefully this will get the ball rolling for me down here; I would like nothing more than to give up designing and building abattoirs and to build AC Cobra's - that's my dream..

I am quite aware of the engineering involved, so if you can do it "simply" then I wish you well. The challenges of a low sitting front/mid mounted engine driving all wheels have been a tough nut to crack for many manufacturers - the Ferrari FF solution employs 2 gearboxes!

Fair enough, and thank you for your well wishes, I appreciate it.
Just out of curiosity what is the drive line power split on the Ferrari FF - is it 70/30 as per the Audi or variable?

Cheers
Wil

Yeah, it was from him.
He is a real piece of work, has ripped off the S.A. Cobra club VP for quiet some $$ as I understand it.
Still, now that I have worked on the GT body it has some merits and looks good.

Paintwerks 05-22-2016 11:13 PM

I'm always impressed when someone engineers something different in a Cobra...but, the vision in my head that I have of a Cobra very much includes a V8. The power can easily be delivered/substituted by a non-V8 engine, but the sound and feel of a V8 cannot be substituted.

AFAIC, a V8 is a large part of a Cobra's soul, and it's appeal.

But it's your car so please ignore me and build what pleases you! What would I know....I put a Chevy in mine! :JEKYLHYDE:p
