Electric steering assist

I'm not real happy with my Pace steering column and the Missus won't be happy with the manual steering.
I would like to fit a Toyota Echo / Barina (I think) electric assist steering column. I'm sure this has been done before. Hopefully someone will chime in who has done the conversion to their Cobra ( any brand).

Cheers

i think the barina has a electric power steering pump and not a electric column some of the speedway guys are using those pumps now ..not sure how you would get a electric column to work as there controlled by the cars ecu or bcm in most cases . def following this thread ,

They have stand alone ecu's. Google says there is quite a few set ups.

Rebel1 01-01-2017 02:59 AM

The mongrel cobra (check you tube) is fitted with one of these:
Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS)

Works very well.

For clarification: The mongrel Cobra is a series 2 RMC.

I haven't looked into it further I'm not going that way but I hope this helps to further your search

Rebel do you run a progressive ecu? Also did you buy a kit or did you get it from a wreck?
If it came from a car can you tell me what type and year please?

albanycobra 01-01-2017 03:40 AM

I need to do this in my GT40 as well....steering gets heavy after a few laps

First, The Mongrel Cobra is a mates car ... not mine. Mostly competes in Hill climbes around SEQld.

The EPS was purchased as a kit and comes with it's own ECU. It was installed by the company I linked too here in Brisbane.

Bit expensive though.

albanycobra 01-01-2017 04:01 AM

looks like XC Barina column is the go and cheap.

albanycobra 01-01-2017 04:13 AM

And it seems you can buy a controller for the Corsa C (Barina XC over here i think) for about $70 deliverd.

This might assist for those looking at the Barina unit:

good info.

By way of comment:
You'll notice from the pic on that Citroen Classic link that the Barina unit is quite large and designed to be fitted under the dash. Cobras usually have little room under the dash with pedal boxes etc. competing for room.

The unit fitted to the Mongrel cobra sits in the engine bay right in front of the foot box and is a very compact unit which can be oriented in whatever manner suits the steering geometry,

The steering column RMC supplied was a shortened Colt column with (if I remember correctly) a 3/4 X 36 spline end. Flaming river steering uni's and shafts were used to install the EPAS between the end of the steering column and the holden manual steering rack normally fitted to RMC's and G-force cobra kits. The owner of the car was running 6 degrees of caster so it was quite heavy to steer until the EPAS was fitted.

The mongrel also uses live side pipes off a 302 windsor based engine so that gives you an idea of how littel room was available to fit the EPAS on the right hand side of the engine bay.

EDIT: to add more info

Found this on the ffcars.com forum. Go to that forum and conduct a "search" for electric power steering.

That is really scary...the angles from the electric steering box to the rack is way way beyond sensible, practicable parameters. If I recall 15 degrees is pushing the limits.

dallas_ 01-13-2017 09:35 AM

Here is another option. I have this setup in my car and love it.
A bit pricey but you could possibly source the pieces locally and do it for less, but a good system overall.

Are you interested in electric power steering alone or would any type of power assistance suffice?
If so, is there a power rack option for the pace ?

Jaydee 01-13-2017 03:12 PM

My wife's Suzuki has electric power steering and if you are parking and you turn the wheel to fast, you can overtake the assist and it suddenly gets heavy.
