ABS a requirement for ICVs in NSW

Gents,

Just letting you all know that unless you have correctly functioning ABS on your ICV, NSW RMS will not issue a VIN.

Might have to work out how you can do that, if you're still building.

Wow - I cant imagine that is good news for anyone. What a shocker. Just read through your thread on Ozclubbies - sounds like you have just about had enough :(

albanycobra 05-10-2017 05:46 AM

Fark throw in the towel if you live in NSW. If you have a kit on order Then cancel it
. Treeve what does this mean for interstate cars transferring to NSW?

Have the given any "logic"... or should I say shared their reasoning?

Next thing they'll want is Stability Control - crazy stuff.

Just when I thought I saw the light at the end of the tunnel :(

Thanks Treeve..

I used a BA Falcon unit.. is three channel, independent of the body control computer and also has an isolated wiring loom (note.. use 4x front hub sensors, with tone rings on the diff end of the IRS drive shafts for my application).. havent tested it in anger yet... but that also underlines the futility of the requirement, as the firmware will be calibrated to the weight, tyres, suspension and balance of the vehicle for which it was intended to 'operate correctly' not the ICV to which it is fitted.. !

By what empirical process would the operation of the ABS be tested to be deemed it was functioning correctly..?

Have the factory manual, part numbers and schematic if required... also have a spare ABS unit and wiring connector from memory, salvaged from a car which was a runner at the time it was dismantled.

Makes the value of a NSW registered cobra increase that's for sure.

Treeve 05-10-2017 05:47 PM

Well they also say you can't use an ABS unit from a production car unless its of similar mass, wheelbase, track width and tyre diameter.
Oh yeah and they want ESC and BAS.

Funnily enough it's not what the actual ADR says, so we're back to the people who don't know the rules making it up as they go along.

Modena 05-10-2017 06:18 PM

I looked into ABS a fair bit as a possibility during my build. I didn't want to go the donor route for the exact reasons stated above, for a car with completely different dynamics I wouldn't be comfortable with putting my life in the hands of that.

There is, as far as my research led me, one after-market ABS system available, it is made by Bosch, and the computer program is custom developed and loaded for you by Bosch in Germany, with your specific vehicle input specs, weight, tyres, etc etc etc. Cost for this system in about 2012 was 5,500 Euro.

The ESC bit will be difficult....I believe a NSW manufacturer went down the road of looking into ESC, and I think from memory Bosch quoted them 200K to develop a system for their car.

I better get through engineering before this madness descends south of the border....

albanycobra 05-10-2017 08:13 PM

ESC game over. To use an OE unit on a kit car without re-cal would be a waste of time and maybe dangerous.

Auswallaby 05-10-2017 08:33 PM

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheer madness. I feel for you guys in NSW having to deal with this ridiculous crap.

Why don't they just come out and say what they really mean "We don't like ICV's so we'll make it so hard to get one rego'd and therefore nobody will bother"

If the rules (ADR) haven't changed relating to ICVs...wouldn't you address this point with the RMS, by simply pointing out that this is an ICV, and it would therefore have an exemption to this requirement...as per the "RULES"?
Maybe include a cut and pasted section of the rules that state this.

Rather than to start fitting ABS to cars that are not "required"??

Surely if it's a "Black and White rule" this should be how you comply to their requests/rejection.

I don't mean that you'd call him/her a fool , or make a big deal about him/her being wrong....
I mean to just go back to him/her with your understanding that this requirement should not relate to ICVs.

or....am I being naive, that it could be as simple as that ?

Cheers,
Warren.

Kill 2 birds with one stone and move to Queensland. Most of NZ and Victoria has!

Treeve.. are you serious with this post..:mad::mad: The cost of installing a tuned ABS, ECS and BAS system for each ICV, then the arguments around the validity of the calibration and testing requriements run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.. (I may have been close to Bosch in VIC during the Falcon production days). The RMS is not actually capable of assessing this requirement given the equipment and resources they would have at their disposal locally.

Aussie Mike 05-11-2017 12:24 AM

If they have no way of properly testing it then you may as well just put a sticker on the dash that says ABS. Run all the brake hoses through an aluminum box with some wires coming out and tell them "Here you go" :o

SydneyChris 05-11-2017 12:36 AM

and it just may work Mike.. ! but what ever you do.. do not remove that sticker.. !

spookypt 05-11-2017 01:02 AM

Sounds like an energy polarizer

Tonus72 05-11-2017 01:09 AM

When I was recently researching this issue from a Tasmanian perspective I called nearly every state and territory.

The NSW rep was not very impressive at all. Apparently more interested in his own self importance than a workable system for car builders.

Someone like that is dangerous in such a position where discretion is critical.

Tony
