Car to enjoy with your family
Can anyone give me their 2 cents worth on what car they reckon would be good for a street use cruiser to pack the wife and squid in and just go out for a coffee or friends catch up.
Im finding that obviously the cobra/truck/5th wheel combo is great for racing, the daytona is pretty much selfish time which I have none of so it gathers dust which urks me, I've a nice new Rangie for work but I'd like something I can go out and have a few hours in with the family and just enjoy cars and family at the same time.
I guess a Fastback Mustang is the obvious choice but what do you guys all do. Once you have more than 2 it becomes a pretty selfish pursuit....

I don't have any squids but if I were looking for a cruiser for the family, I'd consider
ZA through to a ZD (or beyond) Fairlane.
An older Ford Galaxie, or Caddy, Pontiac etc.
An eighties F Truck
A seventies Brougham or a Statesman.

How old (big) are your kids?
Best family car we've bought is our 1998 Paul Smith Rover Mini Cooper.
NO KIDDING!
It happily fits the wife and two kids (more passenger room than my old 2005 BMW mini). This was a Surprise to me too.
Everyone from my granny to the Kids love crawling all over it, and always ask for the mini, even ahead of the cobra (I know! DNA tests are pending).
Steering is sharp and nimble. It's SO light, low and exposed it feels like you're racing around just pulling off the traffic lights. Fuel costs next to nothing, parts cost even less. Easy to work on, so I do with kids in tow.
Handles traffic like a rat up a drain pipe (to quote the late Barry Sheene)
Has great racing heritage including Bathurst win.
I reluctantly only agreed to buying a mini as a point of protest against my wife for vetoing a lotus Elise and Porsche 911. I never thought she'd agree, not did I think I'd like it, or that it would grow to become a member of the family. But it has and we love it. I now advocate that every young family needs a mini.
Whatever you end up with, good luck with your hunt and keep us posted, I'm curious.

60's hardtop cars offer some good memories for me. We had a few 50's cars as well, growing up. Roll the windows down & enjoy that american
'wind in the face" car time. Build the motor to suit your dreams....

I used to have a Porsche 944. Just enough room in the back seat for 2 sprogs.
I'm looking again at something that will take the wife and my 4 year old boy. The 944 if getting dated, but I've considered chopping the roof of. Are there any 4 seat sport cars out there?

If the EK is any bit as reliable as the old EH I had, that would be the pick, particularly as a wagon format.
That'll let you pack the picnic case, table and chairs and all the gear needed to manage the sprogs too.

At the risk of sounding totally boring......
Wife and toddler = comfort reliability and convenience. Comfort = not too hot or noisy. Reliability = modern, for the most part. Convenience = four doors to mount a child's seat in the back and provide easy in/out of said child, and room to carry lots of kid stuff and folding chairs and icebox in the boot. Happy wife, happy life. Wife is not happy if 60s cruiser dies on the side of the road--at night, in a storm, in a heatwave, on the way to a car gathering (that she wasn't too fussed on going to anyway but has come along to keep you happy) or a long way from home.
That said, Lyn and I used to put Craig and his sister into the back of the Healey and head off on interstate rallies -- wing and a prayer stuff!
So my choice for a modern -- Audi RS3 sportback.

or for a cruiser, 65 Chevy Nova II that has been really well resto-modded with LS1 or 3 and bullet-proof electrics and cooling systems, and of course, aircon.
