Side pipes leave me with a headache

Hi all :3DSMILE:

Have been running the cam in and finding the sides pipes are very loud.

I admit it is inside the factory and we are running at about 2400rpm. %/

At the momment I have the 600mm hotdogs in 3" pipes.

Any thoughts on larger hotdogs.

Any one in Victoria metro selling longer quality hotdogs?

Can have up to about 1000mm in current set up.

Any thoughts.

Took the camera up today so will email them to Jason to put on for me.

Still trying for Wakefield Park Raceway. Guess you will hear it when we meet at McDonald's **)

Cheers

Pipes Pipes wait till ...........

Bernie,
You have seen and herd my pipes.
What did you think of them?
They are two 18" hot dogs welded end to end giving 36" of hot dog. They are 2" ISD 3.5" OSD encased in a 4" stainless outer pipe.
Loud but not to loud?????
See them in my gallery.
Regards,
Bryan

"" What you say ""

Hey Bernie, My First ever long trip was to your place with the pipes doing they thing, to ensure the cows knew we were on our way.I was so happy to have my car on the road i didnt really notice the pipes.
But on the way home my right ear was definetly buzzing, i couldnt crank the radio up loud enough.
I've just left the pipes cause i love the sound but invested in a pair of RF cordless head phones to
1. save my ears.
2. keep them warm
3. hear the tunes.

and by the sounds of it not get the Sh-t scared out of me when you roar up beside me

Cant wait to see your car.

;)

Seen These?

You might take a look at these.

That insert looks great.

But at the end of the day the outlet to the right pipe is only about a metre away from your ear. It will be loud no matter what.

When I first had my car on the road I ran the side pipes but had to use ear plugs.
I got a DB reading on my meter of 108db at my ear at 100km per hour.
The LPG also stunk when I had to sit in traffic.
So now I run the same system but have it exiting behind the rear wheel arch.:D :D No prob's with noise any more:D :D

So to sum it up.
If you like the active side pipes.
No need for expensive exhast modifications.

$5 for a dozen disposable ear plugs...easy:D

And the money you save, put it on the bar for the next time the Vic's hit the Mount.:)

I don't know what you are all complaining about. The roar of an angry V8 is the sweetest sound of all.

ac andy 09-14-2003 04:05 AM

Maybe you are getting too old!

Andy.

750hp 09-14-2003 06:46 PM

Bernie - 3" ID or OD? I'm guessing ID.... What's the OD? What type of packing are you using? How much compression are you running?

foothills gary 09-14-2003 08:40 PM

Why not try a couple empty .357 Maggie buckets, one in each ear, like the old timers use to use at the range. It will definitely send a positive message to anyone who may be considering a "jack",with the added benefit of sound attenuation!

Thanks guys

It is probaly is an ageing thing. I'm so used to driving around in Anne's car. When she's asleep in the passenger seat its sheer peace and quite.

Bryan

I can recal your pipes and dug out a photo that Danni took when you were in Mt. Gambier.

The current hot dog has 3" OD pipe welded on each end and the exhausts are hotdogs about 500 to 600 including pipe.

I will take a photo and re submit the Thread next Monday the 22nd when I get back from Melbourne.

The additional hotdog welded on may make a difference.

The motor is Mike Moores old motor and we have put a new cam in and reduced compression for pump gas premium unleaded.

The insert could be easily added if still to loud.

Failing this it sounds like a stereo.

Hey the money is on the bar %/

Thanks guys. Will get the photos on next Monday and re submit the Thread.

Where can I get a quality hotdog muffleer?

Cheers :3DSMILE:

Hi Bernie,

Go talk to Darren at Di Filippo engineering, he'll set you straight. These guys have been very helpful with sourcing materials form me to build my side pipes and If they can't get it thay can probably make it for you. They are based in Melton so it's on your way into Melbourne from SA.

Here is a link to their site : Di Filippo Engineering

Stephen C.,

Do you know of anyone who's used those baffles?
Personally I love the sound of the pipes but my neighbors don't seem have the same enthusiasm as I do... :MECOOL:

BMK 09-17-2003 07:27 AM

Thanks guys

Will keep on eye on this Thread to see what else turns up.

Darren Di at Melton is a great starting point. Come to think of it I met his Father out at Calder Raceway a year or so back.

Do they still run that high 4 second rail. Think it ran a 4.99 one night there at nearly 300mph

It was suggested that I run one big hotdog

As I said I will get some pictures on next Monday or Tuesday of the current pipes. Come to think of it the old Thread Jason started may havea photo of the pipes.

Thanks again for ideas. Will ring Di Fillopos tomorrow morning to see what they say.

Cheers

If this is happening while you are in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area, especially running at 2400 rpm for an extended period of time, it may not be the noise. Headache is one of the symptoms of acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

BMK 09-19-2003 05:51 AM

Hi John,

I can assure you its a noise Db related headache. We ran the cam in outside their factory and they have big fans/blowers on their dyno going at the time.

The option at the moment is double the muffler size and I am talking with the exhaust guys at the moment. The cone insert is an option that will bounce the exhaust gases around into the muffler.

Darren at Di Fillipo is helping with facsimiles to me. %/

Bernie,

I'll have to pop in to McDonald Bros tomorrow and say hello. I'll be out and about picking things up. I've got to go and see Darren D and see if my last few bends have turned up and pick up the tube to build the side pipe bodies.

Cheers

BMK 09-21-2003 06:26 AM

Hi all

Yes its 36" of exhaust coming up. Will be a few weeks though.

Wait till you hear the exhaust as it is. Under acceleration it sound like a race car coming out of a turn.

Whats wrong with that

May attract the wrong type of attention.

More pictures coming up for Jason my Posting bitc* to put on for me. He's got nothing to do when not on 'rostered days off' %/

Cheers all
