5.0lt efi

Hi All, I am new to this forum and have been building my G-Force Cobra it is running a 5.0lt HO but when I got the block there were no vacuum lines attached, I have worked out where couple of them go but there is 3 lines coming from the back of the Plenum, can anyone help out where these go. I have blocked the holes at the back of the block so I do not have to run the Smog pump. Also is there anyone else in this forum from NSW building the MK1 chassis.
Thanks Stuart

Adrian S 11-30-2003 06:08 PM

Hi Stewart,

I'm building a Mk 1 G-Force too - the engineer is coming on Friday so I've been rapidly covering up the chrome bits (hope he doesn't read this thread !).

I'm running a stock 351W and run the following vaccum lines:-
Brake booster
Computer (Autronic)
Charcoal canister
Fuel rail regulator

Thats it ! pretty simple unlike most production cars which feed vaccum lines off in all directions.

Hope this helps,
Adrian.

Hmmm,,,,I think you should also have a "map" sensor too.

Manifold absolute pressure.

The specific vacuum-hose routing will depend on the EFI setup (SD or MAF, specific computer, etc). Best bet is to get a Haynes, Chilton, or other service manual -- the vacuum diagrams are in there for each year. If you can't find one, let me know, and I'll dig it up for you.

Cheers,
-Neil.

Thanks for your replies, I actually found a diagram in FFR forum and it looks straight forward. I am running a BAP sensor and mass air flow not vss so that will be ok.

Adrian if you have any photos of your build and if don't mind I would be interested in taking a look, I still have a bit to go, so any ideas will help.

Nope, no MAP. I'm running a MAF sensor straight to the computer. The only thing I did forget was the PCV valve.

Cheers, Adrian.

Stuart, thanks for making me get off my a... and upload some photos finally. I've only done 4 so far and looking at these, I really must take some more recent ones. Let me know if there is anything you are specifically interested in. What stage are you up to ?

Stuart 12-01-2003 02:01 AM

Adrian I have posted some photos in the gallery which will basically represent the stage I'm up to.
Currently I am waiting for a computer and mass air flow and TFI dizzy and connect the fuel, lines and it should start.

Welcome aboard Stuart. It looks like you are making some good progress there.

I wonder if it would be more efficient with a MAP sensor? I understand that is what the computer uses to determine "engine load". May also be primarily for altitude considerations (barometric calculations?).

What would a guy typically want for accurate injection computer decisions I wonder......

Mass Air Flow sensor for entering air volume.
TPS (throttle position sensor, VERY important)!
The O2 sensors for rich/lean air fuel ratio.
Engine temperature for hot/cold performance.
Crankshaft position (of course)!

I wonder how the combustion chamber temperature is monitored? It seems THAT would control an EGR valve to reduce "peak combustion temperatures" to limit formation of NOX gases.

And how is a "knock" or pre-ignition condition monitored? Which would result in an immediate retard on the timing.

I love this "tech" stuff! :D

Stuart, why do you mention VSS here, w.r.t. to vacuum diagrams? The VSS is electronic, and is required by the computer for idle control.

Cheers,
-Neil.

Thanks for the welcome Bernie but I've actually been a CC member longer than you so it should be me welcoming you. I've only posted a few times but since most threads get off track pretty quickly (mostly interstate rivalry), I bail-out. Being a Kiwi, I can't understand the interstate bickering. Now if it was Aussies vs Kiwis - that's a different matter:3DSMILE:. I wonder how many Kiwis on CC there are living in Oz ?

Hi Stuart
I might be wrong but I thought with the new ADR rules you could not use the old ford 5lt unless its running on gas.

Craig W:rolleyes:

Just extra info, I have been told you can run this config without the vss installed and the motor runs ok and if it does need it hopefully someone could advise

Thanks
Stuart

Hi Craig

I have been advised of this from where I purchased the kit and I have also been told that new rules with RTA, that even running with gas will still make it virtually impossible to make it legal.

I am planning to have it registered interstate where it might still pass.

Otherwise I might have to invest in a newer motor.

Thanks
Stuart

Stuart - any cars in Qld that are going for a 2003 Compliance Plate have to jump through hoops to get their car registered. Depending on who you talk to seems to determine the Emissions Level that you have to pass. I've spoken to engineers who will approve a 5.0L motor, and others who would require the new BA motor (or Chev/Lexus equivalent).

I wouldn't bank on being able to do the interstate tango when registering your car. It might be worth speaking to the transport department and engineers (hypothetically speaking -- without giving them your name), and seeing what they have to say...

Stuart 12-02-2003 02:36 AM

Thanks Craig
I have spoken to a mate who lives in Tas who seems to think it maybe possible

I hope your car's ready in time for the Targa then - kill two birds with one stone :)
