Easy way to get a VIN

I see lots of comments about the difficulties in getting a VIN number so I was dreading the day when it would be my turn.

As it happens, I got mine very easily (in a matter of a few days) so thought I'd let you know how I did it in case it helps others.

When the engineer first came round, I commented to him that the engine didn't have a number. He said what ever you do, don't apply to VicRoads to get an engine number as you'll be waiting (& stressing out) for months. Instead, he advised that I should just make one up and stamp it on myself. So I did. I just used my initials and my birthdate. With that the engineer was able to get the VIN in a matter of a few days.

Not sure if this procedure would work in other states.

Cheers,
Adrian.

Adrian,

Well done on the VIN. Hoping I can have a look at the final product on the road soon.

Got the engineers tick of approval yesterday. Getting my noise test done on Thursday and hopefully will take it to VicRoads early next week.

Can't wait to go for a cruise. Today would be perfect - sunny, 27C, a light zephyr of a breeze, and clear roads.

Congradulations Adrian, have fun blasting for whatever is left of Melbournes clear skies.

Adrian S 01-13-2004 02:23 PM

Thanks Bernie,

I'll be looking for any excuse to take the beast out. Don't have a soft-top yet so will have to take a raincoat whereever I go.

I've gotta take it on some long-ish runs to shake out the bugs (and cobwebs). The car's been sitting in the garage so long that several spiders have made it a home. It's now eviction time !!

G'day Adrian,
well done on getting your VIN. I need to stamp eng.# on mine as well and wasn't sure what to do. Would like to find out who your engineer was a he sure sounds more understanding than most. Did you go thru Vicroads with body still in gelcoat? any qestions on that? did you have to blackout all visible chormeworks. Enjoy your 1st street legal blast!!

Hi Leeroy,

I'll send you his name in a PM.

The wipers are unpolished stainless and he was ok with that - if fact he didn't even comment on them.

The car is still in gel-coat. Having it painted is not a legal requirement although I think the whole car has to be the same colour. Haven't been to VicRoads yet - next weeks job.

Cheers,
Adrian.

Hi Adrian,

I think you need to take it for a spin over to Sydenham. Congratulations, not long now.

Cheers

Thanks Mike, I'll definitely be dropping by.

On with the saga....

It was getting just all too easy !

I went for my noise test and failed with flying colours. The EPA regs say 90db. I clocked in at 93.5db. This is at 3300rpm. There goes $27.50. The guy got a bit upset when I smacked him one....just kidding, but I felt like doing it. Actually I questioned his recording equipment's ability to compensate for ambient noise since the test was done just 20m from Station St in Box Hill - quite noisy. He then launched into a lecture about calibration, sound waves & pressure and I drifted off in boredom. He warned me about stuffing chicken wire down the exhaust and even threatened to dob to the EPA if he caught me - w.nker !

Has anyone got any suggestions about killing off 3.5db easily? I didn't want to have to mod the exhaust.

Needless to say, I blew off some steam driving home !

Cheers,
Adrian.

2 and a half metres of choock wire did the trick for me.
I'd use the wire and take it some were else to get checked.

Adrian S 01-15-2004 03:22 AM

But who'll mind the chickens while I'm gone ?

750hp 01-15-2004 03:40 AM

Stuff 'em in there too ;) Who'd have thought that carbon monoxide was one of the secret herbs and spices???

Aussie Mike 01-15-2004 03:44 AM

Stuffing the whole chook up ther would be more effective.

One of the advantages of Sidepipes is that you can fit quite a few chickens in there. You have to be careful though cause sometimes they shoot out and hit the pit wall whilst blasting down the main straight at Queensland raceway. Ask Craig he knows all about it. :D

Cheers

Gawd!!...now we got loose chooks running around Melbourne :3DSMILE:

Hey Adrian, If letting the chooks loose worries you...drop into Oz's place over Brissy Southside just after dinner.

He uses that stainless pot scouring stuff when he's washing the dishes. ;)

Dont let him see ya flog it tho...he can get real mean :3DSMILE:

Rebel1 01-15-2004 03:49 AM

Ooops .. they beat me ;)

Adrian S 01-26-2004 03:48 AM

Second time lucky. I went for the noise test again (different place this time) and clocked in at 84db. Now I'm all set to go to Oz's place for dinner and might even help with the washing up.

Rebel1 01-26-2004 04:04 AM

Hey Adrian S, congrats mate...... now I guess we'll see ya terrorising the neighbours.

What did ya use to shut it up...chicken wire or Oz's pot scrubbing stuff? :3DSMILE:

If any one does need to cut a few db from there car what i done in a commodore i had was were the exhaust flanges together after the extractors , cut a flat piece of steel the same shape as the gasket and cut a small hole in stead of a 2 or 3 inch hole that would be in the gasket . That took 9 db of wy car .
