hey all l was wondering if anyone had problems fitting a GT40 manifold compared too the standard one!!!!!

If it's only height problems that you're expecting, I believe there isn't any difference. Mustang guys are swapping them every weekend, so I don't expect that there'd be any other throttle cable / fuel rail / rocker cover clearance issues...

Alvin 01-19-2004 04:08 AM

COOL
thanks 750

I've got a GT40 intake on my 351W but had height clearance problems. I had to put a wider scoop on the bonnet and this was after machining about 6 mm off the intake flange. I think you'll be OK with a 5.0L though. There's a few guys running this set up with no issue (e.g. Peter Duncan).

Cheers,
Adrian.

Hi Alvin,

My bonnet scoop is quite wide. DRB says this is to allow for EFI engines. Like you I would have prefered the smaller scoop.

My engine is standard and it did not fit (too high). The AUII has pretty large engine mounts which I have changed to standard mounts which should gine me about 35mm more. If it still wont fit I guess I'll have to get some welding done.

My engine has GT40P heads, does that mean it has GT40 manifold? or is that something completely different?

Regards

Cameron

Cameron - that's weird that a standard 5.0 motor didn't fit under the scoop! When PCC gets back from the land of warm beer and cold women ( %/ ), he'll no doubt let you know if his engine fits OK.

GT40 heads won't mean a GT40 manifold. The GT40 manifold his individual tubular runners from the upper plenum down to the lower intake. The standard upper intake is a one-piece unit.

thanks all for your information

Check out my photos if you want to see what the GT40 manifold looks like.

750hp 01-21-2004 05:12 AM

Adrian - nice pics. One question, is it an optical illusion, or is your plastic fuel filter REALLY close to your exhaust?

Alvin 01-21-2004 05:30 AM

wel spotted it does look very close to the exhaust

Alvin

Adrian with the drb the engine sits alot forward than the rest!!!!

Adrian S 01-21-2004 07:16 PM

Nope, it's pretty close. I do have a heat shield in between exhaust & filter but have been thinking of removing the filter altogether since I have a filter sitting before the pickup pump now so it's a bit superfluous.

Alvin, with the engine sitting more forward you may still have clearance issues with a 5Ltr. Kind of hard to know until you try it.

cameron02 01-26-2004 03:32 AM

Well I fitted my engine with standard (old style) mounts today and the engine still does not fit. Too high by about 40mm.

Its a lot better than it was with the AUII mounts. But still, bummer.

There are currently 3 main points of contact with the bonnet.
1) The throttle sensor which sits on top of the throttle body.
2) The Front of the drivers side of the intake manifold.
3) The Coil Packs? I think thats what they call them.

In addition to tis the oil filter is currently pressing into the supporting front end. I will need to get a shorter oil filter just to keep it at this height let alone getting it lower.

These modern EFI's must be pretty high. Even if I can lower the motor I think I'll have to investigate a new oil pan as I think the engine will sit too close to the road.

A friend told me that the coil packs can be remotely mounted so I guess that takes care of contact point number 3. Anybody bot suggestions for points 1 & 2?

I will email DRB toinght to see what they suggest.

Any ideas welcome guys

Cameron

I don't know much about the efi engines.
But wouldn't it be possible to turn the thottle body around so the sensor sits on the side.
Maybe you can grind or plate the intake, depending on how tight it is.
You could also run a remote oil filter.

This is just off the top of my head so I'm not sure if they are at all practical. :JEKYLHYDE

Hi Cameron,

I had the same trouble although not with the coil pack as I mounted it lower. For 1. you can flip the throttle body as Jason suggested but when I fixed item 2 I found that the throttle posn sensor was ok. For 2. I basically had to cut the bonnet scoop off and put a wider one on. It also gave me the opportunity to go for that riveted look. Initially, this still didn't fixed the problem so I machined 6mm off the GT40 intake flange. In hind-sight however, I'd have opted for a different manifold altogether as I think the GT40 will restrict my 351.

I'll probably go this way eventually and may go back to the original bonnet look.

Adrian.

Use a 1994-1995 style Mustang 5.0L upper/lower or 94-95 Cobra upper/lower. Both of these have a forward curve but are, more importantly, lower than the standard 5.0 pieces. You can also find this manifold on 1991-1992 Tbird/Cougar 5.0L cars too. This was done to aid the manifold fitting to the new low profile hoods of these cars.

cameron02 01-26-2004 07:37 PM

Hi Rlearp,

Are you talking about a different type of intake manifold?

Hi Jason & Adrian,

I thought about flipping the throttle body but thenhow would I connect the axcellerator cable?

Thank you all for your help.

Cameron

Adrian S 01-26-2004 10:16 PM

Cameron,

The accelerator cable would need to come in from the back instead of the front. Can be done but you might have to knock up a different cable bracket. Not sure of the path of the cable from this direction but it will be a bit more tricky to snake it down to your pedals.

I found though that the main height issue was the front right hand corner of the manifold. Once I solved this I didn't need to flip the throttle body.

Regards, Adrian.

The intake that Ron refers to is a totally different intake to the earlier "1986 - 1993" manifolds.

Here is a photo of the 1994-1995 intake:

By the way, Ron owns the biggest GT40 forum on the internet. Have a look when you have a chance www.gt40s.com Lots of participation from Australia, USA and the UK.

rlearp 01-27-2004 05:06 AM

Cameron,

Yes the intake is different but works well. It can also be milled a little and material taken off the upper near the valve cover to make a really compact arrangement. And, EGR is cast into the manifold so if you are using EGR it is a little simpler than the older style. I've converted 86-93 style to this newer style and it isn't that hard. You'll need a new style throttle body for sure, TPS if I remember, and new style fuel rails.

cameron02 01-28-2004 04:45 AM

Latest update:

I removed the coil packs tonight and will mount them else where. That has helped quite a bit.

However I still have 2 points of contact.

1) Throttle sensor which keeps the passenger side of the bonnet 26mm above deck.

2) The front drivers side of the intake manifold, which keeps the passenger side of the bonnet 11mm above the deck (I removed the throttle sensor to test this).

With the throttle sensor removed the passenger side of the bonnet just meets the deck.

I have taken on board the ideas posted here and I could rotate the throttle body (would involve making new accelerator bracket), but this would still leave problem number 2.

At the end of the day I may have to put a bigger scoop on but I dont think I should have to pay for it. The kit came with an extra wide scoop to suit EFI motors and DRB suggest the 302 windsor. I have not heard back from Peter at GT40 (DRB) so I have emailed him again tonight.

So far he has been very good. I'll let you all know his response.

Cameron
