Angry starter motors

hey all
l have a problem with my starter motor????
It sound like it enages but when the motor is about to kick over and start just spins I've replace the starter with a rebuilt one!

I was wondering if my engine has too much compression for 10.7:1
its just a tin top (standard) starter...
So if anyone has a solution l would love to hear it!!!!!

Alvin

Alvin,

If it was compression that was stopping the motor from starting the starter wouldn't just spin. It would just sit there and burn up if you never turned the key from the start position. It sounds almost as if you may not have the correct snout on the starter and it is just barely engaging the flywheel. Either that or your flywheel could have some teeth missing and when the starter gear gets to that spot it would just spin. I am running 11:1 in both of my cars and have no trouble at all. In one car I have a gear reduction starter and the big block has the heavy duty starter that came from Ford. Pull the starter and look at the gear teeth on the bendix. If they show any sign of strange wear, such as just at the very tip, then you need to check for a different snout. If the starter looks ok, check the flywheel for all the teeth.

Ron

Sounds like you have an automatic starter on a manual car or the other way around.

Common problem.

You do not say what trans you have ( or I missed it ) but if you have a manual trans, you need a starter for a manual trans. The teeth and nose are different.

The other problem is with the number of teeth and size of the ring gear. You need to have the correct flywheel for the engine to match the starter to. If you have a starter for 164 tooth ring gear and you have a 157 tooth ring on your flywheel, chances are you will spin the gear without engaging the ring gear.

Check the flywheel, starter and trans configuration.

I burned up a perfectly good high torque mini starter miss-matched.

Just my $0.02

Yep - exactly what Ron says.

I ran a 13:1 compression big block with the standard Ford "clapper" starter for years without a problem, so that's definitely not the issue. Another old bomb car of mine once had a sticky solenoid that made it sound like the starter gear was just spinning without throwing out into the ring gear. I used to just give the solenoid a tap and everything was fine for the next week or so.

Ahhhh, old ****boxes - gotta love them. I learnt all about oversteer in that little Gemini. Still the most fun driving experience of any car I've ever owned.
