Jason,
Don't worry about all these low lifes that are like vultures just waiting for some poor innocent guy to make a mistake.:D
Now I think what your saying is the gilmer drive belt is making alot of noise and it's getting on your nerves. If so maybe it could be either to tight, to lose or just not worn in - a belt that is new compared with a worn belt can vary quite alot in thickness and in width.
Darryl

P.S One more hint - try not to drink 2 bottles of scotch before posting next time!!:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE:  :D

BMK 07-27-2004 01:23 AM

You're OK its everyone else that is crazy

Jason

:3DSMILE:

I had considered gear drive as I just love that sound. Quite apart from the obvious advantages over a chain.

Hey, tell me how you get the belt to make that noise. My belt is dead quite.

Will watch with interest to see what is suggested to quieten the gilmer belt down and then just do the opposite - I guess.

Love that sound. %/

It's tough at the top

The door bells ringing and there is a guy in a white coat standing there.

Should I answer it.

Sorry Jason - aaaah KING JASON II - You will have to condition yourself to the noise. The roar of your club members as you enter the room will be far louder.

Jason,

I may have a solution for you. The noise is possibly a couple of things.

1. Too tight, (gilmer drives dont need a lot of tension). If too to tight the belt may not be meshing correctly on the drive.
2. The main noise is from air being squeezed out of the toothed area. I have heard a solution to quieten these down is to drill holes in the milled (lower) section of each of the drive wheels. Check the internet hot rod chat sites or search "gilmer drives". (you will need to drill a couple of holes in each section check out more info from other sites)
3. If its new it may be the drive gears have some sharp edges catching on the belt. May need to smooth off rough edges.

Hope this helps.

TYPICAL

Thankyou all for your wonderful advise as per usual 13 responses and all bar 1 (thank you tony ) was next to useless. Random abuse will be rained down on you in the future:LOL: :3DSMILE:

ebustin 07-27-2004 09:00 PM

Tony gave you the scoop. Check the ten. first. Then drill the holes, to let the air out. Also make sure you have the correct belt..

BMK 07-27-2004 10:18 PM

Do we drill holes in every indent between each tooth.

How many each?

Does anyone know how to make them sing - get that whistle sound for those of use who want the noise?

:3DSMILE:

I love ther sound of gear drive and belts that sing/hum

Cheers

Bernie

I had to turn the entire post 'up-side-down' to read it correctly.

So, if you play it backwards; does it say Paul is dead?

LOL

vettestr 07-28-2004 07:48 AM

to add the noise back into system drill the holes from the other side. You can also use my invention to add a cool sound and I will fax a drawing to you if you want. You will need to buy a deck of playing cards and some 200 MPH tape to keep cards in the spokes of the wheels. VERY COOL STUFF

In H.S. I had an old truck..... a 1941 chebbie with a 216 six banger. It had vac. operated windshield wipers. We used to get going about 50 MPH down mainstreet (almost top speed ) and turn off ignition= put vac hose to wipers in a bucket of kerosene until it ran out tailpipe with clutch depressed. Then turn on ignition and pop clutch...... The result was solid white smoke that would fill 2 lanes of traffic each way so bad you could not see any cars behind you. Did this until smoke cleared and could see the red and blue lights flashing behind us. They had NO sense of humor when found out it was intentional and not broken:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE:

Tony Cram 07-28-2004 05:00 PM

Bernie,

From what I can find out it is holes drilled in every milled section. Will try and find out more and post reply. Not sure why yours does not make any noise unless it has holes drilled. Mine is well worn and can be heard in the cabin easily. Other possibility is worn belt (ie square sections have too much slack and air not getting trapped.) or incorrent belt as "ebustin" suggested?

Anyway will try and find out more.

PS. They must have run out of moonshine over there into kerosene now??????
