New photos in my gallery
Hey guys!!
Its Todd here again... Just been here again to post more shots of Dad's car in his gallery!! We have been putting the final touches on the car in Lilydale to Doug Pierce's Panel shop, we did all we could do before we take the car back to McDonalds Bros Racing - probably next week. I took a number of shots of the car as we put the "jewellery" on the car including badges etc... As you can see in the shot the car is really taking shape... The color of the car is still growing even more on us as we put the bits on!! You can see that the color is so different in the light... it goes from black, to a dark greeny blue to a bright blue to a silvery blue... I love it!! I cant wait for it to be finished!! It's just a damn shame about the rain and cold!! Today was apparantly the coldest day in Melbourne in 6 years!! Thanks Todd |

The paint job looks great! I can't imagine the effort required to shoot base, stripes, meatballs, and fender stripes in the limited time before the clear. Car looks superb, detail is fantastic. Hope my paint looks that good when I get to that stage. What type of fixings did you use on the bonnet and scoop? How were you able to install them without damaging the paint, even though all the holes were probably drilled before painting? Congratulations. Regards. |

Thanks for the comments. Sorry I have been busy with the Cobra at the panel shop and then the painters, so have not checked your progress out. All going well I hope. %/ I'm very pleased with the job that has been done. The more and more I bolt bits back on the better it looks. The colour is amazing as it changes in the different light. I was told this would happen when I was talking with the guys at Shelby American. Doug my painter sprayed the white down the centre of the body and the yellow over the front guard/fender. Three of us then went about - for five hours - masking up the stripes and the gumballs. With everything masked up and the gumballs masked on we hit the colour. Once painted everything under the paper or tape, was white or yellow. :3DSMILE: Hope to be back on the street in a few weeks. Ready for summer :MECOOL: Cheers Bernie |

%/ Hi was just fixing some of the bits back on and I'm amazed as to the change each little bit adds. The scoop is attached using "button heads" in stainless steel. They are available at most bolt/nut shops. I drilled the scoop at the required intervals and then placed it on the bonnet. I marked the four corners and drilled them. I then fitted the scoop and drilled the rest - in place. All of this was prior to painting. If you check my gallery photos out you can see the Cobra in the Gel coat with everything together. **) **) I drove it for six months like this over 16,000 k. Dirt roads and all. After painting I just ran a drill through all the holes to get all the stainless button heads back in. I used nylocks to hold the "button heads" in. Don't tighten them, just pull them up or you will 'star' the paint. I used the same "button heads" around the bonnet edge and up in line with the front of the scoop. This lot are ornamental. Will try and catch up in Adelaide at one of the meetings soon. %/ Cheers Bernie |

I bet it's a good feeling bolting everything back on. Like putting icing on the cake. As for retaining the bonet scoop, I've been giving this a bit of thought lately. I plan to use stainless button heads like Bernie has. What I'l do a little differently though is I'll use nutserts in the bonnet rather than the nylocks on the back. The Classic Revival bonet is double skined and is about 10-15mm thick where the scoop bolts on. I figure by driling carefully I'll be able to drill the outer skin and leave the iner skin intact. The hole for the scoop is molded in and has a nice neat return on the edge. I'll install the nutserts and bolt the scoop on leaving the nice looking stainless cap screws on the outside and a clean bonnet inside with no bolts visible. Cheers |

%/ The idea that you have with the 'nutserts' will look great. I have seen a similiar scoop attached with rivets as the rivet pulled up between the inner and outer layers. When you paint you can just paint over, as the 'nutsert' will be under the scoop - like the idea. Unfortunately, my scoop attaches through a part of the bonnet that is double skin but glued/glassed together. Hope to get over prior to the Nationals. Will see how I go with finishing the aluminium etc. etc. **) Cheers Bernie |

Don't get me wrong, the stainless nylocks look good too and I may end up going that way if the nutserts don't fit.

I'm a bit disappointed in your paint job - nothing to do with the job (it looks fantastic) but because now I'll be all alone at the Nationals in my gel coat.:CRY: How many others are going the the Nats just in gel coat ? Not sure how I'll go at the show'n'shine but my gut-feel says I might miss out on a trophy :LOL: Cheers, Adrian. |

:confused: I think the option of the 'nutserts' would also be good for around the bonnet/hood edge. Once the 'button head' is in place, it will cover the 'nutsert'. Must say I was not keen on the rivets as they have a tendancy to pull into the glass and are obviously difficult to get out if you need to touch up paint or change things. Just my $.02 worth. %/ Gino - AC514 - on this forum has used the 'nuserts' across the rear of his Cobra to attach/screw the hood bits into. Looks good and he can just screw them out. Just a thought if you plan to use the 'nutserts' Cheers Bernie |

The Cobra will be at Doug's until mid morning this Saturday. Then it heads over to McDonald Bros. Racing in Settlement Road Thomastown - just east of High Street. %/ If you are not sure of the stripes, perhaps you may get some vinyl from your signwriter to put on temporarily?? :confused: Have seen this done on a gel Coat car in the States and it looked good. I just looked at every possible colour on the sites here. "Factory Five Racing's" site allows you to put the colour in and then you can check out dozens of say red cars and the various stripe colours. Cheers Bernie |

Have you considered painting some stripes on. I did that. Check the old photos out on my gallery. %/ I drove it for six months like this. Ran up nearly 16,000k in that time. I also placed the replica race stickers on the guards/fenders. They are available from 'Finishline' on this forum. Just a thought. I think Gel Coat looks tuff. Have a neighbour here who has a flat black '34 coupe that he runs around in. Was Gel coat black and he rubbed it down and drives it now. %/ Bernie |

Thanks I'm very happy with the paint results. Now the black and white - yeah?? :confused: Will need to talk to you about - "how to do this".. Actually, I would like to run a bar along the bottom like Jason - Reptyl - has done. Would make a good comparison to have the Gel Coat going to finished colour. Or perhaps I can add another colour photo next to the black and white?? :confused: Have you seen Jason's site below his details? What are you thoughts?
