WANTED - Jag rear ventilated discs
Melbournites only.
I'm guessing postage for two brake rotors would be a little high coming from another state.:) I've finally got the rears working and judging by all the smoke pluming from the Reptyl’s rear after a few quick laps of Calder, I need all the cooling possible for the arse end. Has anyone got any budget rear Jag brake upgrades. There seams to be heaps of different combinations for the fronts, but you don't hear too much about the rears. |
Reptyl,
A few years ago i did rear ventilated conversion on my series 2 Jaguar. Got the parts from V&A Spiteri in Melbourne (North Blackburn) (03) 9899 4851 Regards, Phil |
Jason,
FYI (assuming you haven't aready seen it) http://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/...keUpgrade.html Keep us posted :) Al |
Thanks Phil,
I'll keep them in mind, although their kit was a little more expensive than I expected. |
Thanks Al,
yes, I had seen this site, thats what's gave me the idea to upgrade to ventalated rears. Just need to find some one doing the same thing in Melbourne that wont brake the bank.:) |
Reptyl,
Yes they were not cheap. The kit consisted of two spacers to spread the caliper 10mm from memory. The hard part would be finding the discs. DBA may be able to help. or Mike M. The discs may even be off a later model Jag. Then again if you dont use the brakes and you have new tyres you might keep up with Garrett or at least gives us a good spin:D Regards, Phil |
V&A were asking $750 .
Found the Melbourne manufacturer in Clayton and picked up the upgrade kit for $360. (kit - 2 rotors new caliper bolts and spacers) :D :D :D :D :D :D |
Gudonya Jason.
Hey..What happens with the hand brake ears thru bolt and brass springy thing...do ya get a longer bolt and wider brass thingy? And....If I keep bein nice to ya...will ya tell me who the manufacturer is? :D :D Cheers |
|
This might be a bit late for Reptyl & also not vented
but here is a cross drilled & slotted rotor I found for the rear of the jags that bolts straight up if anyone is interested. Regards Nick Rotor |
Gee that avatar's distracting.
What are we talking about again...? Rotors, that's right. That one looks nice; I still think the ventilated disk would work a little better. And if it doesn't, I take them off and send it to Aussie Mike, I'm sure he could wack a few holes and slots in them for me.:) |
No problem Jason. The mill is right to go.
They are good blokes at Jagayre. I was going to suggest you speak to Gary and see what he's got but you beat me to it. Cheers |
Reptyl,
Good buying. New Brakes , New tyres Wakefield should be fun. If you can, try and get some cooling air to the rear brakes , that diff can get real hot and you know how close the the discs are to the diff plus a lot of hot air gets channeled from the enging straight to the brakes via the transmission tunnel. Regards, Phil |
Excellent point Phil....
In fact did I read somewhere that some of the original racing versions had little air ducts under the car, in front of the back wheel, feeding air to the back brakes. Cheers |
Well..... I rang that Jagayre mob today...
Guess what?? They had the kits in stock. They were well priced They were pleasant to deal with They are sending a kit to me today. They told me the sun was out in Melbourne...must be summer today hey? If this keeps up I just may have to change my attitude about Melbourne. ;) On second thoughts ... :D :D :D |
Jason & Les,
Is JagAyre's kit imported from the UK and if so, who makes it? This is a mod that I'm very interested in doing. Would you mind posting a report the install and the improvement to braking? Cheers |
Al .... The impression I got from Jagayre was that they manufactured the kit themselves.
Gary, ( The fellow I chatted to at Jagayre) implied that all the Jag dealers in Oz purchase from them so they had sufficent numbers to manufacture in batches. Jason will no doubt give you his impression of braking improvement as he seems to like burning up rear brake pads. I want to improve back braking as much as possible as it seems the RMC's (leastwise those I've driven) seem to suffer from too much brake in the front. I feel this is maybe common to most jag suspended cobra's as those huge jag 4 spot calipers on the front, combined with the much lighter weight of the cobra just compounds the front/back brake relationship. Cobra Restorers in Sydney used to offer a front brake modification for the RMC's which used a holden 2 piston floating caliper and modified rotors to fit. This removed some front braking and I'm told it worked extremely well as it balanced the jag braking at the rear. A friend of mine and myself spent an afternoon at a local shopping center car park testing his RMC brakes. We chalked up all 4 tyres to see what happened under hard braking. Absolutely bugger all retardation from the back before the front locked. We almost got to the point of fitting a proportioning valve to the front lines would you believe. Anyways...there was an editorial in one of the recent Snaketales which detailed the effort one owner put in to get his brakes working properly. Certainly, the vented rear brake kit will at least keep whatever rear brake is there for a longer period in spirited driving sessions. Only having 2 wheel brakes makes setting the car up for fast corners a bit of a gamble. Cheers |
Ohh...forgot to mention.
Must be olde age  The vented rear brake kit makes damned all difference in normal driving...you wont feel any difference at all. But...driving fast in the twisties is a different story. :JEKYLHYDE |
Oops
On a slightly different subject. I'd love to get rid of those heavy cast iron jag calipers. Would make one hell of a difference to sprung weight. There are some billet alum ones available, but I'd have to go sell my body to be able to afford them. :o Then again... I dont think I could carry that much small change :D :D |
Thanks Les!
Ya fingers must be gettin' tired after pushing all those letters on ya keyboard! :D I can feel a healthy debate comming on..... From what I read, vented rear disks won't improve max braking effort. It only prolongs the effectiveness of the rear brakes b4 they get too hot and has the added benefits of protecting the diff driveshaft seals as well as allowing leaking diff oil not to fowl the brakes(which are really the bigger problems). So for the street they'll make bugger all difference but on the track they'll cut times and save you time and $$ fixing the diff. I read that story in snaketales about jag brakes and it left me scratching me head! Now the course "Brakes 101" taught me that's good to have the front brakes lock up b4 the rears or else you'll be driving backwards. I don't dispute the lack of balance with jag brakes in a cobra but I thought a better solution to the problem might be to get grippier tyres rather than reduce the effectiveness of the front brakes as was suggested in Snaketails. In any car, the front always does the majority of the work. Even the best brakes need the best tyres to get the most out of them. So increasing the friction b/w tyres and road will increase the effectiveness of the front brakes and they should lock up later. Or, back off that middle pedal and don't lock 'em up. :D I guess I'll find out when my cob hits the road! :D |
