Question rear coil overs - spring rate

OK, I have a problem.

Two broken drive shaft uni's, and a broken gear box - bad news

Time to rip it all apart and line up the moving parts. I have a salisbury live axle, currently using 900 lb/in coil springs and Koni adjustables. New coil overs will be verticle.
The coil over springs tend to be in the 250, 350, 450 range ?????

The car weighs about 1050 kg, weight is roughly 50/50, diff is unsprung so sprung weight is about 230 - 240 kg per corner. I want the car to be stiff, for sprint days.

Anybody know how to calculate the correct spring weight for coil overs

Snaken

Well will be when I fix the shocks and get a new drive shaft and gearbox.

I dont know how to work it out but my car (still building) is a very similar weight (less unsprung) and my kit supplier recommended 500 lb springs each corner.

Snaken,

Talk to King springs. (07) 55396700. They are real helpful.

Have you already done the coil over conversion to the Homebush? I am thinking of converting mine.

These spring rates sound about right for logging trucks, but for a Cobra?

Rear springs 180 - 220 #/" (street), 220 - 240 #/" (race).

Fronts are a little stiffer because the control arm acts as a lever on the spring. Load on wheel ~ 600#, load on spring ~ 900#.
350#/" for a small block, 500 #/" for a big block.

Hi Pete,

Those QA1 col over look like a nice piece of kit. I've bought their Crome Molly rod ends in the past and they seem to be solid and well made. I was having a look at a pair of their shocks at MacDonald Bros Racing a while back. Billet alloy construction and a fairly solid looking shaft running through them. Bernie is running them on his Cobra.

Did you go for spherical ends or urethane?

Cheers

Hi Mike,

I went for the spherical ends. Better for the track. The big 15 in road tryes I run at 15 to 18 lbs so that softens the ride on the road.

The 12 shock adjustments will be handy for easy adjustment. Probably need to re arrange the bump stops.

I got a bum steer with the old spring rates, they were more like 250 - 300 than the 900 advised.

The tech people at QA1 were very helpful.

That's not what that lady from the Goulburn Motor wreckers was saying when Pete and I were out there looking for parts for his broken Drivetrain.

I didn't go there, but she was kind enough to return my sunnies.

Very friendly and obliging people in Goulburn.

If I have chosen spring rates that are too hard, the vibration could have pleasant side effects
