Registration Question
Help and Advise Please!
Want I am considering doing is using an imported engine. Now I have found an engine I like, transmission, computer and loom etc all ready to go. The package is extremely attractive by price, brand and performance. It is new with lots of extras. The engine is a stock factory manufactured crate motor, however for a performance vehicle. The scenario is this 1 This new donk comes with proof that it is new, and a 2004 model. 2. No engine number yet stamped as new. 3. Then in theory, I obtain the engine part number from the American manufacturer, link this to the particular vehicle it is exclusively used in, and then link this to the pollution / emission label that relates. 4. Now given that the country and state of manufacture has equal or greater emission regulations. 5. Then the RTA see that the engine through this paper trail complies with Australia (NSW) ADR 79 emission regulation. Question is will this work????? Opinions Please SNKBTE |
What engine are you talking about and is it fitted to a car that is sold new in Australia?

Missing Info
Sorry,
GM LS6 330Kw Fitted to the Z06 Corvette in the US Exately the same as the LS1 externally, different internals to the LS1 SNKBTE |
I have heard that US engines of a given year are far more compliant than a similiar year here.
Say a 2001 Mustang engine meets our 2004 here. Check with the registration people as they will ultimately be saying yes or no. Additionally, there would be emission specs with the engine you purchase. A 2004 engine will/should have emission specs. I cannot see a problem as I can recal Mike Moore registering his Extreme Roadster with a new LS1 motor (import) Just my $.02 worth..%/ Bernie |
Hi snkbte,
Sounds like a great way to go if you can convince RTA. Contact them at: The Manager Light Vehicle Standards, PO box 198, Haymarket, Sydney 1238. In NSW it seams to be fairly cut and dried but things may have changed. Keep us informed. It would be good to get an LS2 crate motor.:D Phil. |
In Vic I know of an engineer who apparently (I haven't spoken to the engineer so this is 2nd hand info) does not have a problem certifying US engines that are already at Euro3 standards. So US ECU & engine were ok b/c they exceeded the current ADR 79/00 (Euro2) standard.

Thanks
The positive comments help but I have posted the new info re ADR 79/01, scary stuff for those still in build.
Phil I note you referred to the engine as an LS2. They refer to it as an LS6 anyone know what makes up the differences. Cheers SNKBTE **) |
HSV have started using the new LS2 6.0 L (same as in new Z06) - check www.hsv.com.au ......

Snkbte,
The LS6 is 5.7 litre with better heads etc than LS1. LS6 around 300kW. LS2 is 6.0 litre with lots of better things. 297 kw out of box plus stump pulling torque. Eagle Auto have unstamped (engine number) LS1 in stock but they are 2002-2003 manufactured motors. These engines should be identical to later motors with only difference being what PCM program was running it. Not sure how engineer or RTA figure this one out?? Eagle also have 6.00 litre Cast Iron block /alloy head motors in stock. Great for a Hot Rod ( different rules, go figure) but not Individually Constucted Vehicle. Eagle do not know when LS2 motors will be brought in but eventually they will. If you are not in a hurry it maybe worth waiting for LS2. NSW RTA are sure making it hard. What would you expect from a state where the Premier dosen't have a driving licence. Phil |
Phil
I now understand the LS6 is the out of the box engine from the Z06 and has 405 HP and 320 Kw. The LS2 is the 6 litre and as you say 297Kw out of the box.
I note your comment on waiting for the 6 litre. However, such a sugestion raises some problems; 1. Can't wait one minute more than I am forced too. 2. Over 300kw in a car weighing around 1000 kg will probably result in a loss of about 12 points anyway! SNKBTE |
It's not an Chev, but anyway.
I imported a new crate 347 Ford for the SPF. Although it's not registered yet, it should be in about a week (I hope). So far seemingly no problems with Rego authorities. Cameron |
Hey there Snkbte, you need to move out here to the NT where there are no speed limits and no points to loose.

Boxhead, what peadl assy have you used. I have looked but am not sure where to start

Welcome to the club here Gav.
I havent got any pedals yet but I will be buying brake and clutch from Ian. I think Aussie Mike has his accelerator pedal fitted and I think it was falcon, there are plenty of Classic cars being built or done and they will jump in soon and let you know what they have fitted. |
As I presume your building an invidually constructed vehicle....your going to need to meet the various ADRs applicaple that exist now.
When it comes to noise and emissions there is specific benchmarks you need to meet. You can either use an existing standard engine that has passed this benchmark previously, or you can use your own job and then proove that yours meets the standards. Full "shed" tests cost many thousands of dollars and it is likely you will need your ecu tuner with you, and youll probably have a few goes at it, having to pay each time. Some old "tricks" like using special fuel isnt copped anymore and in a full shed test the fuel used will be monitored. If you ever manage to meet the standards youll probably end up retuning the car anyway so that the performance and driveability is optimised rather than emissions. |
Gav,
I used Ians pedals but offset them to the left to give better space for accelerator. Offset was about 25mm which still lets you get your foot behind the clutch pedal when cruising. Ians new clutch is offset at the pivot point which allows rose joint connection to cylinder. Much neater than early ideas. For falcon pedal ($17.00) slightly modified works ok but I plan to make up fabricated unit which will work and look better. Mike Murphys gallery has photo of offset pedal arrangement. Phil |
Offset pedals,
Here's the Classic Revival pedal setup. I've bent both pedals about 1.5" to the left to make more room for the loud pedal. There's still plenty of space to slip your foot behind the clutch to rest it on a long drive. Ian supplied the lazer cut pedal blanks and I machined up the pivots and added bronze bushes. I think Ian does them with nylon bushes from the Falcon but I had a piece of bronze in the scrap bin. I haven't done the loud pedal yet. I'm tempted to use the Falcon Pedal and modify it. For $17 that's pretty cheap for something that's pretty close to the right shape and it'll make a good starting point. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...1409pedals.jpg Cheers |
