Bare metal
Since 18 months is far too long to remain idle, I've started a little project to keep me occupied over the next few months - a XC mountain bike. :LOL:
I've stripped down completely the frame of my good old trusty mountain bike and binned everything except for the brakes and the pedals. The weather in Melbourne the last few days has been great, and since I have no cobra to drive around in and enjoy the great outdoors, I've set up shop in the backyard stripping the paint back to bare metal on the frame. Originally I was going to prime and the paint the frame, but now looking at the bare metal has me thinking that perhaps I would like to keep the bare metal look - only problem is, how do I go about it? I assume that the final result will need to be coated in *something*.....? Any hints for someone desperate for something to do? |
Powdercoat? Clear style?

http://www.ppc.au.com/ Just brush it....it is like a ceramic coating. Don't worry about the UV exposure as the bike wont spend much time in exposed sunlight. |

I'm imaging that I can get away with 1 litre of the POR15, or maybe 2... Might also consider adding a topcoat, Glisten PC. Should cost between $156 and $312 depending on how much I need. |
Whoa!!....Jase...this stuff goes a longggg way. Get the smallest you can buy.....I got 1/2 litre for all suspension bits and there's 1/2 can left.
It is expensive...but bluddy good.....and goes a long way. Cheers |

Don't burn your skin off !! Just get it acid dipped - may take a couple of dunkings. There is a powder coater I use in Bayswater who has an acid bath and he charges very little - quite a refreshing bath too :LOL:. Best of all, he's open til Saturday arvo and occasionally on Sunday. Not sure about the clear powder coat option...powder coating is quite brittle and you'll only know you've chipped it when a rust spot appears. Cheers, Adrian. |

Time to burn eh..:LOL: My Cobra needs all of the aluminium rubbed back with WD40 and pads. %/ Then there's the chassis to be cleaned after my many 'offs' and grass mowing at Wakefield Park Raceway...:LOL: %/ I have also seen an acrylic product in the hardware shop called "Incrylac" an acrylic lacquer in a can suitable for spraying outside brass ware etc. %/ Check out the spray can cage. Grab a few extra 'colours' cans for some late night sign work..:LOL: Now the guy who took my '66 Mustang away is a bike guy called Cadel Evans - his pretty handy on a mountain bike also...:eek: Bernie No time to burn here... |
Thats not a bad idea - I should offer my services to other members to do all the ****ty jobs no one likes doing. I could be like an apprentice!
