Post Windscreen Wiper ADRs

Could anyone tell me what the go is with 2 and 3 wiper blades.

What is actually required to satify this ADR?

Cheers,
Dale.

My understanding is the wipers have to wipe 80 % of the windscreen, including all of the vison in front of the driver to the edge of the right hand side of the screen.

This means 3 wipers in Vic.

Snaken is correct, there is a % of the windscreen that needs to be swept to satisfy ADR, but this percentage is worked out by a formula the engineer does, it never seems to be simple. The easiest way to acheive this is 3 wipers but with a little (actually a lot of) effort you can do it with 2. It is easier to do on wiper motors that use solid connections between wheel boxes but it can be done with cable driven units. I decided to use only 2 wipers on my car.

Regards.

Dale
ADR 16.4 says the wiped area must be 80% of area A, 94% of area B, and 99% of area C. These areas do not include a 26mm perimeter from the edge of the daylight opening, on a Cobra where glass meets frame. This 26mm perimeter can be used to your advantage if you want to use 2 wiper arms

These areas are determined by angles, horizontal and vertical, from the drivers eye position, and vary depending on width of vehicle, but are aproximately as follows;
area A - nearly whole screen, area B - 2 thirds of screen starting at drivers side, and area C the third in front of the driver.

As you may have gathered from comments in this forum, its also dependant on how concerned or fussy your engineer is on the day he checks. You should also arm your self with a copy of the ADR's so you can argue any borderline issues, and not get hoodwinked.

In Qld OZVENOM partitioned and provided relevent documention to get 2 wipers approved. So we fitted 2 wipers to our Harrison as per OZVENOM's specs and it works fantastic. No worries with approval either.

And they were stress tested on the way down to Nationals and worked just as well as the 3 wipers we had on the old DRB. You don't notice any difference in coverage when driving.

Although at one stage it really started bucketing down, Cobra started aqua planing around, couldn't see a bloody thing even with wipers running flat out and footwells started filling up with water. Yes, we had soft top on. Oh the fun of driving to the nationals.

I also like the fact that there is a lot less load on the wiper motor than when running 3 wipers. And 3 wipers just looks poxy in my opinion.

What are the chances of getting a copy of these fitting instructions and relevant paperwork?

Best to take to Scott(OZVENOM). Although more than likely if he gets the time he will reply to this thread.

If I talk to him in the meantime, I'll ask him about it.

Have been given Scotts name and number and plan to give him a call in the next day or so. Thanks for the help everyone.

Boxhead, if I find anything out, I'll let you know.

Thanks,
Dale.

Thumbs up 2 Wiper Diagram

Dale, Boxhead,

I have a drawing of a two wiper setup with measurements / spacings at home if you are interested. With 2 wiper system windscreen angle has a large influence on achieving overall wipe.

There has been some info on the forum before about setting up 2 wiper systems in the US forum (I think?) Try doing a search on the whole forum. There was one particular thread that was very good and had some good photos of the results.

Let me know if you want the measurement diagram I will dig it out and scan it.

Regards

TC

Hi Cobbindale,
while your on this thread I thought Id let you know I got your message. I finished all the work to the dash/steering/column, but pulled everything apart before I got your message. Ill let you know when I reassemble everything and post some pictures.
As far as altering the column goes, your engineer should really see it.

Regads.

Les,

Do you have a higher resolution copy of your picture. I tried to enlarge it and print but looses resolution and is difficult to read.

I am interested to check the specs against my RMC.

Regards

Tony.
