Wiper gearing

I have yet another question to everyone, i bought a lucas wiper assy from ebay recently and pulled it apart today to clean and rebuild.
I have read on some other threads somewhere telling you how to modify the gearbox to get correct wiper operation, does anyone know my answer or where to locate the threads?
Here is a pic showing my gear.

Best you do a search on this as there have been several threads on the Lucas wiper system.

I'm not sure what you mean by "correct wiper operation". If you are referring to the sweep arc of the wipers (how far the wipers travel from side to side), I can only tell you of my experience. I bought a used set up from Bethina Garage (I think. It was 10 years ago so hard to remember). Much later, after installation, I noticed that the passenger side only travelled about half way across the windshield. By this time, I had had the dash installed and everything, so it was too late to change it . I know, I should have tested it before completing the dash, but I didn't. Anyway, I decided to redo some wiring and change the heater etc, so I had an opportunity to check out the wipers. It turns out that the wiper posts ( the part that sticks out from the body where the blades attach) had different diameter gears on them. I called Paula at Finish Line and she sent me the correct size. Now the wipers work the way they were supposed to in the first place.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Hiya Boxhead.....I'm using the two blade wiper system..the 3 blade will be different.

My motor gear is 32 tooth 120 degree sweep. The pic you show is 32 tooth 105 degree. so you have to fiddle with the sweep or go find a wrecked BMC car and check the gear. Mine I think is from a Marina.

If you dont wish to look for a Marina, then modify the gear wheel as per this site:

http://www.erareplicas.com/427man/wiper/index.htm

There are , as suggested, also slight differences in the diameters of the gears on the wiper boxes which can have an influence.

Use trico A103 arms which you can trim to length. The length of the trico arms is governed by the vertical distance from the center of the wiper box shaft to the top of the screen glass. This ensures you wont wipe over the chrome screen surround at the top. These trico bits will polish up to a chrome like finish if you want.

I park mine on the right hand side and the blade lays against the bottom screen base and extends to about 25mm inside the screen side upright. It then wipes to 120 degrees to the left (the blade bottom almost overrides the chrome screen botton at this point). The left hand blade overwipes that part of the arc to 120 degrees to the far left of the screen.

Wiper blades are available in 10", 11"and 12". I'm using 11"which I had to fiddle with and trim a bit to use but they work well without overwiping any of the screen surround or seal.

I believe the wiper gear you have is the one used on the 3 wiper system.

Cheers mate

I have read through the ERA instructions and it looks like I have the 1.25" wheelbox with concave gears, does that mean that I dont need to modify the gear?
I thought there where different sized gears aswell (as Rebel has stated), does my 32 teeth 105 degree gear mean I can fit it straight up with 2 wiper posts?
Or have I got the right comination for 3 wipers?
I would prefer 2 wipers
