Mando,
those TB's look about 48mm, or so. Have you got an air filter strategy? As you probably know, I have the vertical version (8 Pack) and use Velocity Stacks for the track and fliters for the street. I am still scratching my head about how to get the stacks on inside filters. I have had no luck with socks as the roll on the stacks does not allow a spring to fit without disturbing the airflow. Can't wait to line up against your beastie. Cameron |
Your setup rocks Mando!
I am now really keen on getting over for a squiz!! All the heartache looks like it was completly worth while if you ask me! Talk to you soon Gav |
Nice Mando.

Air Filter
HI Mando and Cameron,
I have no idea what to do with filters, the new engine has the straight TB much like camerons. I have been told not to worry about it, just keep out of the dirt. I really want to use filters, how much different is the performance with/ without filters?? Thanks Phil |
I have a feeling you are going to have plenty of power even with the socks Phil!

With filters there will be a performance hit and appearance wise filters really suck. ;) But I just couldn't run an engine long term without filters, it will be in for an early rebuild/freshen up if run without filters as many a past Cobra owner has discovered. I run Unifilter branded filters on my vertical 8 stack. Funnily enough also on a 347. You can get the Unifilters unbranded, but they only come in red. I hope I've got that brand right. |
Based on some of the dyno work I have done, here are my numbers;
Rear Wheel HP - With 39mm Velocity Stacks - 341 - With 98mm Velocity Stacks - 367 - With Air Cleaners - 340 The longer stacks also deliver a fatter torque curve. I agree with craig, run filters 99% of the time. I only run the stacks for events and will live with the slightly shortened life. I would also run the socks if I could get soime to fit properly. the Unifilter guys have told me that the throat openings of my setup will not allow a proper fit. I have also looked at creating a custom filter box to house the stacks and filtration, but in order to keep it looking 'right' it's going to take some thought. Cameron |
Gt40
Hey Craig.... how close is the big reveal??
Cameron |
Vainty/protection
HI Cameron and Craig,
I agree that filters should be used. An idea I have is to create an air box that attaches to the underside of the bonnet. You could make it big enough and use filters all arround the edges. The underside of the air box would have a foam/rubber pad, so that when the bonnet is closed the air box seals to the stacks. This way you can have the wow factor with the bonnet open, but the protection of the air box and filters when it is closed. I would have to solid mount the engine, or modify the engine mounts by drilling and bolting thru to restrict movement. I have plenty of roon between top of stacks and bonnet, I have a pic in my gallery. It also solves the problem of the IAT sensor, I was just about to weld in a bung to fit this in one of the stacks but could have this fitted into the airbox. The only problem that may arrise is that the "tune" may alter with the bonnet open. Craig would love to see a pic of your engine with the socks. Phil |
Phil,
I have seen that setup on big block Robnell's. They also pipe in cold air to the box. Cameron |
There was something very similar to this on Ebay a couple months ago. I was real interested in it except for the fact that it wouldn't look right attached to the hood of my car. I do have access to a cnc set up & when I get time for such a project a may reconsider & try to design something...orrr, maybe not :(
|
Philm, I like the look of your setup, are they TWN from the states?
Cameron, your right they are 48mm. The guy that makes my setup is just about to start production on a cold air system using air boxes for each bank that bolts directly onto the throttlebodies. I should be just about ready to install the system by the time he has finished building them. Ive seen some made from plastic or carbonfibre, but his are made from billet aluminium. Regards. |
Mando,
looking at your engine spec, we are almost in the same family, I have a 347, Z Heads and M800.... I'll save you the money and email the engine map ;) We have spent about 25 Dyno Hours getting two great maps, with and without filters. You will love the MoTec for flexibility. I also run the wheel sensors for the traction and launch systems. Haven't given it a burst on the track yet, but fun to test in the rain!! %/ Cameron |
Cameron, that would be an enormous help. I wasnt looking forward to that part of the setup.
What are Z heads, they dont ring any bells. Regards. |
Mando,
PM me your private email and I'll send over some info. Injector size, cam profile etc... etc... will affect the tune, but this may be a starting point. Z Heads are the ford Aluminium units as supplied with my 347 build. I'll send that info too. Not as trick as AFR, but so far so good. Cameron |
Throttle bodies
Mando,
The thottle bodies are made locally by a company called DC&O racing, Ingleburn NSW. I have purchsed the M48 Motec system, is the M800 a better unit? I will be using a distributor. The Z heads are ford Racings performance head, It is the head found on the 347stroker crate engine. Phil |
Philm, I havent ordered any Motec at this stage. I dont know much about cars or how they work, so Im guided by those that do. Im fortunate that the guy that owns the place where I tinker and make bits has quite a lot of knowledge in most areas, he mills, lathes, fabricates, tig welds and even made his own fuel injection on his 429 Robnell. He usually lets me know if Im being ripped of, and if any ideas I have are really going to work.
Regards. |
Cameron,
what cam are you running in that rocket of yours? Is it the same cam you've had from the start? Richard PS Vintage direct from US |
It's the same cam, quite mild really.
It's a Crane Hydraulic Cam Cameron |
