Sway Bars

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some words of wisdom, on wether there is a need to have front and or rear sway bars.
I have notice some people have them and some don't.

If yes is the answers what are the best ones to use and where do I get them.

Sway Bars

HI Rod,
I have a front sway bar but no rear and that seems to work well. I have heard that a rear bar may increase over steer.

I purchase mine from Ian, and It did not fit:mad: . I was actually told this by a fellow CR owner but had already had it organised.

Phil Neall has the best set up I have seen.

Including price, contact details and fitting instructions :)

Roll bar

I have a roll bar only on the front.
One day the watchamacallit/thingy that connects the end of the roll bar to the suspension broke
It broke while turning hard into a right hand corner and nearly speared me off the road.
The car handled like a wet sponge without it working.
If you look in my gallery you can see the bar under the car.
Cheers,
Bryan

Bryan

After years of dreaming about what the handling would be like in one of these cars, the first drive after my build was profoundly disappointing, with no steering precision at all. But with the addition of a front anti-sway bar, it was like driving a different car, where handling reality lives up to the handling dream I carried for years. Now, even my Mustang, which I always considered to have very responsive steering, seems mushy. No matter what anyone says, remember that handling on these cars is what you make it. Keep experimenting.

My front bar was made by local Pedders shop. I'll ask them if they kept the shape on file. It made a huge difference to the handling.Front bar is 19 and has a few adjustment points.I'll try to get a photo.

Planning to try a small rear sway bar this year.

Regards,

Phil:)

Phil,
If Pedders had any info that would be great.
There is A Pedders outlet not far from work. They may even be able to send the info there and they could make it, if they weren't keen on giving you the info.

Thanks

Rod

Phil, After speaking with several cobra owners, I plan on using a 1" sway bar on the front and a 3/4" on the rear. Jeff

Roda

I originally purchased one from Ian but it didnt fit at all. I then made the the sway bar out of 20mm PVC rod (heatgun used to form its shape) then took it to Moorabbin Spring works and they made it for me. I have not driven without it so I dont know what it handles like without one.

Someone show us a pic so I can see where it fits.

My Cobra needs some sort of handling improvement as she is light as hell at the front end (vague on rough roads) and that is with the Ford block in it:eek:

Bryan - couldn't see the pic in your gallery

I am also looking into a swaybar. I found this in the Hurricane Cobra website under owners form. http://www.vintageperformancemotorcars.com/

In process of having front and rear sway bars fitted to my car this week. Bars are priginally from a Toyota Hilux. I will hopefully be able to update on how the car feels next week, in comparison to driving without them for the past 3 years. Suspension is Jag front & rear.
regards
Charlieh

Now that's a great offer for CR owners. :)

Phil, will different engines affect clearance of sway bar. eg different sumps. Are all LS1 engines mounted in the same location?

RODA 05-17-2006 12:20 AM

Phil,

Thanks for chasing up Pedders.

I will give them a ring and find out what they need and when.

There is no hurry for the sway bar so when I get the info from Pedders I will let you know and you can do it when ever it suites you.

I think its fantasic that you prepared to do this. That whats fantastic about this forum everybody is so happy to help out when ever they can.

Thanks again

Rod

Craig,

If its an LS1 in a CR then the motor position is predetermined. The only thing you have to be careful with is the position of the radiator hose connections as they are close to the sway bar.

Hope the GT40 build is going well.

RODA, No problem as long as its not the weekend before the Nationals:) :)

Put me down for one if there is enough people to do a production run to get the price down.

boxhead 05-17-2006 03:58 AM

I will also take a sway bar, at that price or reduced price still sounds like a bargain to me.

pneall 05-17-2006 08:48 PM

I am having a Cobra builders BBQ at my place on 23rd and may pick up a few more enquiries . Once sorted I will get final price off Pedders and place an order. I will leave financials between yourselves and Pedders.

Regards,

Phil:)
