Wind deflector ?

Does anyone know where I can get the makings of a wind deflector for my car. (Pref SE Melbourne)

Guessing I need something like a boat windscreen.

I can make the frame and if I can find the material or if there is a more complete option please let me know

have heard that it must be < 5in

I'm working an aero screen at the moment. I'm making a full width one for my car which will be about 5" high. I'm also planning to have a go at some individual traditional style ones.

I just bought a neat shrinker stretcher tool to curve the aluminium frames and I've been investigating getting some marguard sheet cut to size. If it works out I may make a couple of extras to try and off set some of the expense of the tools.

Stay tuned.

I thought you were trying to get your car registered Mike???

Must be getting close now.

The wind deflector is all part of the plan. The more I think about it the less I want to fit a proper wind screen with wipers, demister and washer etc. It all adds weight and complexity and I'm really liking the race car look.

All the cars I've been in with a full windscreen have the annoying wind buffeting you in the back of the head. I figure the aero screen will just push the wind up and over you witout all the buffeting.

So it'll basically be a road registered racer. All I'll have for weather protection is a toneau (sp?) cover that'll have a zipper down the center. A 4 wheeled motorcycle.

Cheers

Well there you go.

That's basically the look that I'm going for too.

I dont think I have the stamina or the inclination for a show car and my interest is really in club/track days and building a car focusing on the fun fang factor.

So the simplicity of deflector is very appealing - kinda regret the expense of a windscreen now - but who knows what I might want in the future.

Anyway - was thinking of getting some clear plastic and running it between the two post points of the existing windscreen - making up my own shorter posts. Anyone know where I could get material like this?

Talk to the Plastic Center in Moorabbin. They do all types of plastic sheet and will cut to size. I use them a bit for work, if you make a cardboard template they will cut in the thickness you want and also polish the outer so it looks like a bought one :D

dont engineers crack it if thay see a car set up for a soft top or toneau cover, then you have to run a demister, the way i sore it was, if you run a finger nail (race screen) no wipers and no demister??????

Aussie Mike 08-09-2006 01:08 AM

No plans to run a soft top and the toneau cover is basically just for when the car is parked.

A few hours work this evening and I've got the beginings of the screen base. The shape is just rough at this stage and it'll need a bit more tweeking and finishing but you'll get the idea.

Just checking the clearance for the rear vision mirror.

I'll make a patern for the screen itself from thin masonite. I'll then take that to the plastics supplier and they can cut me some marguard sheet and polish the edges.

I wonder if there's a way to attach or apply those clear lexan plates to the rear of the roll bar? I know they are quite effective in some new roadsters like the Boxters and SLKs in eliminating the buffeting to the back of the head. It would certainly help in luring my wife to take more rides with me if the "hair problem" is deminished.

Leeroy 08-09-2006 03:38 PM

Mike
will you take a flat piece of marguard and shape it then attach it to your alumin. base section or do you intend to heat it and have it follow the same shape & profile?

Got a 3meter long forced convection oven here at work which would be perfect to use if you like, it can maintain set temperature to +/- 0.5oC. which allows low temp. for shaping but no distortion of the material.

Leeroy.

Ray,

I have seen the very thing that you are talking about.

Alvin on this Forum - see his 'Post' on engine oil has made one up. perhaps PM him and he maybe able to give you his thoughts on how it works.

Hi Leigh

I think a piece of flat Marguard will work OK. The screen only curves in one plane so it shouldn't be too hard to form. I'll see how I go just curving it round and attaching it to the angle.

On the individual areo screen I reckon I'll take you up on the oven offer. I think it'll be a bit more complicated shape, potentially with the mounting flange molded in.

Cheers

Mike,

Really love the aero screen idea but am concerned how the committee for the Nationals and Shelby Fest would view this style of screen. You probably dont need the streamline advantage cause your powered by the Dark side:LOL: but I think it would be good to get some feed back from Shelby Fest committee..

The initial responce from the NSW guys is you would be in race class%/ even though the regs say you only need a "street legal windscreen".

We could always have a street class for aero screened cars:JEKYLHYDE . Just have to buy another couple dozen trophies:eek:

Phil:) :)

Looking good Mike

(with apologies to Trading Places)

Didn't happen to make two did you?

Might I suggest when it comes to the individual Aero Screens that you plan for a run of them - I'm pretty sure that there will be a few of us ex-bikers out there who like the 'wind in the face' effect.

On the Nationals/Shelby Fest category thing - I'm keen to participate but I'm not building for a category.

I'm sure that the organisers will use common sense - very confident of that at the Shelby Fest having seen it run - and will categorise my car fairly.

Aussie Mike 08-09-2006 10:21 PM

I'm not too worried about classes at the nationals or Shelby Fest. I doubt I could drive well enough to win a trophy regardless of class. I'll just be out there for a good time.

Cheers

I am watching your screen build with much intrest Mike, let me know if you do decide on making these things to sell.

I was going to make short stubby screen posts and get some glass (or whatever works) cut to suit, I was going to use the full screen centre stay as a support for the centre of the screen.
Mainly only so I can fit the full screen whan I want too, Ronda has vowed whe will nevere get in the car if I have an aero screen with Biggles flying helmet and goggles on.
