Yokohama Avid S/Ts seem to be a pretty well rated 15" tyre. Not surprisingly, they are not stocked in Australia. I decided to ask Yokohama why. Here is the correspondence, albeit back-to-front:rolleyes: (Start at the bottom!**)

The belts are laid in a particular way to counter the road camber that allows rainwater to drain to drain off to the sides rather than to the centre of the road. That way when you let go of the wheel the car doesn’t wander off the road. Sorry I can’t get more technical than that. It does my head in, especially when it comes to the orientation of asymmetrical and directional tyres.

Yokohama Tyre Australia has a different range to the USA. The tyres are different for the side of the road we drive on.
I suggest you look at the Y352.
There is a sizing chart there too.

Comments: Yokohama Avid S/T are available in the USA in a range of 15" tyres. Can these tyres be obtained here? If not, what tyres do you have available in 275/60/15 and 255/60/15?

Sounds like a bunch of crap to me. The tread pattern on this tyre is asymetrical and it can be installed on either side of the car.

I could believe this if the pattern was directional and there were specific right and left side version as there are with some high performance tyres.

I reckon they have fed you a line.

275/60-15 is one hell of a tall tyre. Are they the sizes you are planning to run?

You're not building a tractor with a Cobra body are you? :confused: :D

I'm running a Bridgestone RE 710 on the rear, great tyre but at 255/60-15 not my ideal size. The Adelaide guys got a dealer down there (Stucky's?) to import a bunch a couple of years back. Don't know if they are still available.

Not as good a track tyre as Avid's, but streets ahead of Y352's.

275/60/15 is the standard tyre for SPF rears. I run these on the road. I now have some untested 17's!!

what the tyre guy said is true tires have built in conicity that counter act the affect of road camber and help make the car track straight
thats why when you buy these second hand tyres from europe that sell really cheap in the trading post they throw your cars handling up the s_ _ _
also when the wheel aligners are to slack to adjust your settings even and claim that its to compensate for the camber in the road thats crap too
because thats already built in the tyre anyway hope this clears up a few misconceptions

If so Jess, wouldn't that mean we would have tyres which would be side-specific, ie to be fitted to only one side of the car to overcome the effect of camber.

I had a friend who cut his springs on the right hand side to allow for camber. He swore that the road always cambers down to the left so it improved handling etc. Thing is many freeways camber the other way especially the right lane. Which would mean that on those roads your handling would be worse than standard.:eek:

Me thinks that unless you are racing it...just get normal tyres.;)

Freeways and multilane roads are built so the water runs off the middle of road. So it depends which lane you're in!!!!!!!!!! Have to say that on my local freeway the car goes straight whether I'm in the middle, right or left lane.

Some of the guys in NSW run a Toyo Proxes S/T in 295/50-15 and are fairly happy with them. They were/are? available localy and even appear in the 2001 Toyo trade catalogue I have. Give Kevin Walker (NSW) a ring if you want to find out more. His no. is on the back of Snaketales

They are directional, but obviously multi cultural, as they work here and places where the water drains backwards.
