The Test Drive

After a three day weekend of work on the Cobra I finally took it for a quick drive up the street and back.

All I can say is holy crap, this thing does not need a super charger.

The super stealthy under body exhaust finished and it makes and whisper quiet 87dB at 4K RPM @ 1/2 meter from the exhaust tip. Still seemed to make a heap of power. I can't wait to hear it with the side pipes on.

My initial impressions of the clutch when I first drove it out of the shed have now been adjusted after a drive on the street. This copper ceramic button clutch is a bit of a light switch. Combine this with 3.9:1 gears and probably 900KG weight and the car wheel spun everywhere. Hard to get away cleanly but I'll master it with practice.

The brakes seemed to work well but a they need a bit of time bedding them in and getting the ballance right.

I'm happy with my progress and got a lot of jobs finished on the car over the last couple of days. The exhaust is done, the new fuel tank is painted and installed, rear hard brake lines and braided lines now installed and a new CV boot for one of the drive shafts.

I'm now working on getting the seats installed as a couple of cushions on the floor don't give you much support.

Hope you all had productive week ends.

Cheers

Fantastic Mike.

It will not take long before the "more power" gremlins get into your head.

Hoping to catch you at Shelby Fest.

Good work Mike.
How did the new speed humps around your place go?
Did you think that maybe your neighbours realised that your build was nearing completion and that why the humps where requested from council?

Churchy 01-28-2007 05:28 PM

Mike,

Great news !! Glad to hear you can now make real broom, brooom noises and also skkrrreeeetch noises

Aussie Mike 01-28-2007 05:28 PM

I think the power levels will be fine and I'm sure I'll be looking for more soon.

I think the issue is more the savage clutch takeup combined with the worn out rear tyres plus the wheel alignment front and rear needs doing. Sure made for some fun takeoffs though.

The clutch engagement should smooth out as it beds in.

The new speed humps are a bit of a bugger. I'm not looking forward to negotiating them. Fortunately they are quite wide with a reasonably gentle slope so hopefully I won't bottom out on them.

Phil, I think I'll be the one trying to catch you at Shelbyfest.

Cheers

When and where is this "Shelby Fest"?

Id love to come and catch up with a few of you and learn more about Cobras.

stephen low 01-29-2007 01:49 AM

Well done Mike but it sadly sounds like the same tune with three days RnR in the shed for us similarly trying to get builds finished.

Just keep on adding those bits to make it legal!!

Will you be at the meeting Thursday? Am keen to get some wiring diagrams if available.

Cheers

Test Drive

Gidday Mike,

Well sounds good your test drive, and the big thing - the car impressed you!!
Thats all its gotta do, re the clutch they arent normally severe I have had several race clutch cars and the worst part is they are wearing but dont really let you know, I am running a Tilton Rally ceramic in this beast, so I wont speak to soon as it might be a prick to drive, wait for it probably about 1.5-2years work left!!

Sad that 87dba, that is pathetic, you know over here we have had new Commodore not pass our requirements 95dba measured at 0.5m, at 3000rpm, why 87dba obviously its a fecking green **shole person who hates cars that designed the law, my advice is take no notice after you pass the certification and put some other pipes on or get an exhaust cut-out........... I will shut up now as I dont want to spoil the very good result of your hard work.

All the best.
