DRB - Crank Pulley touching frame
Just when I thought I was getting close
The crank pulley on my DRB is touching the Torana subframe. My engine is a 94 (?) EB Falcon 302 but I changed the timing cover so I could run the old style waterpump / alternator etc. Anyway, both the original crank pulley and the aftermarket one I have touch the frame. The original crank pulley is much larger in diameter and almost fits inside the subframe, whereas the aftermarket one is smaller in diameter but longer for the waterpump and alternator I have - and sits on top of the subframe as I drop the engine into place. On another thread there is a mention of different Ford mounts. I think I have the older style mounts - do newer ones make the engine sit higher ?? Or possibly I need to chop into the subframe ? Cheers, Dan |
Dan
Opened thread link and OH dear it's mine. I had std AU mounts large round and very tall, and in my case the RH mount was twisted badly from the crash the donor car had. Advice I got and followed was to fit the std 302 mounts dating back to suit XY sort of era I think. Rectangular low and worked a treat for me - except I cut off lower half of drivers side serpantine mount arrangement. Did this to clear steering chassis mounts in my case, top half holds alternator and on passengers side I made up a new bracket off the 3 engine bolt points to hold other pulleys. I'm reading a subframe mod here but I'd not rush into such an option as it can affect engineering approval of course, can you shift mount points? Cheers |
dan ,
you will need to cut a section out of the subframe, and as slowly said use xy engine mounts, |
Hi Dan,
You might have a couple of options here. 1. Grind a curved depression out of the Torana crossmenber (as stated by other chaps) where the pully touches (seen it done). 2. May be able to tilt the motor back. I did not have the problem, but my motor tilts back a couple of degree's, not a problem for EFI but might not be best for carbi motors. Use the old mounts. The new oil filled mounts are very high and you will not fit the engine under the bonnet. Onlt thing I'm not sure about is will you need engineers certificate for the grinding? |
If you have converted to standard rotation style waterpump, alt etc ,
you can get small diameter gilmer drive kits made by Diecrest that will fit if you havent lowered your engine. Use the old style mounts as previouly mentioned but be careful of engine angles, impacts bonnet clearance for the upper intake and can affect pinion and gearbox angles. If you have the later body drb its higher on the chassis which helps bonnet clearance, still will need the wider scoop though. To fit an injected windsor under a flat or 9in scooped bonnet requires lowering engine and notching crossmember. most engineers wont notice it if you do the notch neat enough.... |
I had a bit of trouble ditting my engine under the bonnet even with the EFI scoop.
I had to make an angled extension to move the throttle body down (and rotate it) and then had to remove the inner skin from the scoop and surrounding area. Also had to modify the bracket holdiong the coil packs as they were too high. My engine being a very late model windsor was a problem. Earlier ones were meant to fit easily. |
