Set up for LPG engine
I haven't had much success on the net, trying to find information about building dedicated LPG engines.
I am after any information that may be out there as far as compression, ignition systems, and maybe supercharging. Any advice from the brains trust would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. Hogster |
Hogster,
Have a look at the Gasresearch site. I once converted a XJ engine to gas using their equipment and info. It worked real well...wish I still had it. Phil:) |
What A GAS//////
Hogster,
REPTYL in Vic has a dedicated GAS engine (he lives in the country so he gets the Government Gas Rebate:LOL:  ) Give him a try....... STIFFY the city slicker:MECOOL: |

LPG conversion
In the U.S. Morgan universe Bill Fink of Isis Imports is famous for converting Plus 8 models to run on propane.
In the UK RPi Engineering has a lot of expertise converting Rover V8s to LPG. Their conversion FAQ page (with lots of useful downloads) is here. Good Luck, Rob |
thanks for the thread link Bryan, You've saved me some typing.
Gas rebate:LOL: |
Hogster,
The following link might help you a bit. http://www.profire.com.au/ They do a gas injection setup, that looks very neat. The ignition will require an efi dizzy (to input cam position). Cheers Andrew |
Thanks
Thanks to those who responded.
As stated, there are very places in Darwin to get advice on purpose building an engine for LPG, rather than just converting one. Having settled on the impco idea, I want to do it right the first time. I've got some reading to do, Hogster |
Hi Hogster
Here is your basic Impco 425 system on a 5 litre mustang motor.Pulled the EFI off (thanks to ADR change during build) and put on Eidlebrock manifold and upper cylinder lube kit and away we went. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._Fords_024.jpg Cheers Brett |
Just saw in the Snaketales club magazine that there is an article on LPG setups for Cobra's coming soon.

Stiffy
Hell the Reptyl produces his own gas.....call that dedicated gas |
I'm turning blue waiting for this article. I can't hold my breath much longer I've already got a set up that consists of...an A86 tank (apa is bust now ) an XG450 mixer...a single plane manifold...a 850 square bore base and all the required fittings...I've been told this works well. one day I will find out.
GAMECO on parramatta road supplies the stuff and also dyno tunes when you are complete ! good luck and make the job fun. this part shouldn't be stressful only the rego crap. |
The ignition system is very important to making power on LPG.
LPG has a higher flash point than petrol so it needs a good ignition system to ignight it. LPG even though it has a higher octane rating than petrol doesn't seem to like as much total advance. It does like the advance to come in quicker though. Getting your Distributor recurved to suit LPG is a must. |

Cobra Car Club Membership and Snaketales
Sambo,
If you are a club member (any state) you automatically get the magazine sent to you. I would prefer you become a Cobra Car Club of Victoria Member given you live in Melbourne, but of course I am biased. :3DSMILE: I do have some spare back issues at home. Cheers TC |
Thanks Tony - if that's the case I'll be joining the local chapter.
|
Brett,
What's your MPG, city and highway, with your IMPCO set up? Thanks, John |
Hi had a talk at the last club meeting in perth and the guys from Profire (link in previous message) are getting some serious mumbo from the system .
force fed gas FFG - Force Fed Gas, injected gas specialist, LPG Autogas, Gas conversion are doing the installs i know that it is in perth but hey any info is probably helpful Best of luck Trev |
A friend of mine has been working on gas injection for Land Rovers. He was telling me that they generally see a slight drop in power but an increase in torque when putting one of these systems on a stock motor.
With the higher octane rating of LPG combined with a turbo you could have a real monster on your cands that's still cheap to run. Cheers |
John
Mine uses 20 litres of gas per 100 km's whether its around town, on the highway or wringing its neck on the track. I am pretty happy with that for a simple system like the Impco on a standard 5l motor. Cheers Brett |
