The Ballarat Holden mob have advertised LS2's on Ebay for as cheap as $7500 no accesories. As recently as a couple of weeks ago I think.
As a Package in a low km wreck (30k) Ive seen a LS2\T56 combo with all accesories for around the $10k mark. Reamined unsold at $10k if I remember correctly. I have a auto search on Ebay for thsoe type of key words, and track the prices their pretty regularly. Its done nothing but convince me to hold off as long as I can, as the prices keep falling and falling. Also I think that as the LS1 has become the single most popular engine choice for current cobra builders, there would be a bit of bragging rights to say you have 6 litres...not just 5.7. :D I wonder if this lot of surplus motors is a result of the fall in holden sales - laying people off and all. |

I meant that the LS2 does provide DOD, but at a price - and who cares at the end of the day? These engines turn a Cobra into a weapon regardless. With regards to LS1/LS2, guys down here in Melbourne are finding it harder to justify euro 3 compliance to VicRoads and that's what the LS2/L76 gives us. I'm waiting on a quote for an L76 crate engine supplied with all accessories, ecu, pcm, loom, pulleys, starter, alt, etc plus the necessary software edits to bypass airbag checks etc. Basically a price to purchase what Holden are currently putting in the SS Commodore, minus clutch and gearbox. I'll keep you posted. |
For any1 wanting to know how the DoD works see here:
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/fea...ne_technology/ Tenrocca you may very well be correct in which case us cobra fellas will benefit. However, the surplus sell out of the L76 is as a result of Holden now using the L98 as they elected to not implement DoD at this stage, so all the L76 stock has to go. Eventually Holden/HSV will be forced to use DoD as emission requirements demand. Cheers |
I guess it really depends what you want.... You could put a cam and springs in an LS1 for the same money that a stock LS2 will cost you, and end up with heaps more power.
The new generation 6 litre engine is certainly enticing, but it limits tuning possibilities with the E38 and E40 ECU's. Down the track I think I'll be getting a 6 litre block and adding a stroker crank. Capacity will end up being 427CI which seems to ring a bell for some reason :) This will also allow me to keep the Delphi LS1/6 PCM which gives me much greater tuning flexibility. |

which ECU does the L76 use? |

Not knowing a lot about tuning these things and given that you're probably one of the resident experts, are you able to explain the difference between the standard ECU's on the LS1/2 and how the tuning is limited:confused: Is there a website which explains all this stuff using small words?? Luke.... |
I bought my T56 for $550, but then it costed me another $1500 for Mal Wood to rebuild back to new.
Still a good deal I guess. I bought my 2005 LS1 with 13,000 Km complete with everything including loom, pedal box, exhaust etc. for $4,300. If I spend a couple of grand on mods I think I will be able to get LS2 type power levels. Gotta love the Chevs for Hp per dollar! Ben |
LS2 uses the E38 and L76 uses the E40.
The currently available software for both of these models is fairly weak compared to the LS1 stuff (the software comes from the same manufacturer though). Firstly, the transmission tables for the new models are virtually useless, it really limits trans settings, (such as setting the auto up for the drags). In general, there is just less adjustability in all facets of the program. All of the basics are there but it's the "smaller", less commonly used tables that I miss. Some of these smaller tables never get touched by tuners, but I like to adjust them slightly to improve drivability. DFCO and Lean Cruise are two that instantly spring to mind. DFCO (Decelleration Fuel Cut-Off) can be modified to enhance engine braking (as I did for Leeroy and Aussie Mike), and Lean Cruise (when properly set-up) can obtain great fuel economy. To be honest most of you, perhaps 95%, will be perfectly happy and probably not even notice any of the differences. I certainly can't do without access to ALL trans settings because I need to optimise the auto for the drags AND cruising. If I was running a manual I probably wouldn't be so concerned, but I would still miss the "nice touches" that the LS1 software provides. |
Thanks Plums,
That's certainly made things a little clearer for me. I know there's plenty of after market tuning software for the LS1. Is there much around for the LS2 or L76 or is it early days still?? Luke..... |
The p76 didn't have a rover v8 it was an oldsmobile block 4ltr v8 not the pommy 3.5. I put one in a 68 2 door cortina it was lighter than the original 4 cylinder. wheel spun in every gear ! They were a great motor...

Ok the quote for the L76 and all the bits has arrived. For everything forward of the flywheel and including fly-by-wire accelerator pedal and everything necessary to start the engine (full list available, PM me) it comes to $11,645. That includes $1000 to re-tune the PCM to ignore airbags, etc. The only thing is that this supplier is asking $7500 for the crate engine, whereas the one mentioned earlier in this thread is $6500. Food for thought.

Well...wot ya expect heh?....you do live in Victoria. :p
Cost of living is higher down there. :D |
Hehe tell me about it. Except in this case both suppliers are Vic based. The one in Melbourne just happens to be asking more than the regional supplier, no surprises there!

Without actually knowing which suppliers you are talking about, I assume they are Ballarat Holden and Holmart (Moorabbin).
I got my package from Mick at Holmart and ended up with a great deal, (he was good to deal with too)... Tell him the price the other mob can do it for and he may be able to do something for you!!! |

If you have an LS1 and ONLY want VATS turned off (the minimum required to make the engine run, ie. no performance tuning), I wouldn't charge anywhere near $1000. For a full MAFLess mail order custom tune, I have charged a few people from this forum as little as $200. Why do Doctors charge $10K for fake boobs??? Because they can... |
