Default Race numbers on cars

Does anyone know if driving a street car (cobra) with numbers on it is illegal?
I have heard that CAMS dont like it and I'm sure its going to catch a cops eye, but is it legal to have them ?
Thanks P

I'm 99% sure you'll be ok as long as your car is street legal, otherwise there would be no signwriting allowed on vehicles at all.....

I don't know about the finer points, but I drove mine from Qld to the Nationals and then onto Melb, looking like this.

And I'll be doing it again in a few weeks. Never been bothered by the constabulary, but I 'always' behave myself

My car has looked like this since the 11th Nationals

and know one has said anything.
Events such as the Dutton rally have their participants driving around with numbers on their cars with no problems either.
Cheers,
Bryan

I agree ,numbers on your cobar are ok as long as you are street legal.
My tag is cobra 36 which is my birth year and have 4 36 meatballs on the car.
Now you know my age and I'am still driving like it was stolen.Just have fun,you only have one chance at life.

I'm more impressed that you're using this inter-webby thing at the age of 70+. Well done and keep on trucking!

My understanding is that it is OK in the USA; although it is cop bait.

In the UK, you have to put a dash accross the numbers to drive on the street, to signify that you are NOT racing.

Well up here in SE QLD it is technically illegal as the constabulary have told me....when they have pulled me over! But I think that they respect the notion that it is a replica race car and appreicate it for what it is....

But if you look at the DEPT Of T rule books race numbers on street cars are illegal...afaik!

What is legal on a Cobra?

There are a couple in Sydney that dont seem to have any problems.

I've displayed the no. 8 in meatballs on mine since '97 and not had an issue with the lawmen.

I was more worried about giving the insurance company an out if I ever bingled it.

Cameron,
watch out for those low types wanting to remove those nice decals! When will you be passing through Sin City?

Hey Cameron....don't forget your helmet for the next National's Gumball Rally, chasing a certain club pres in his bumblebee....this is where you'll remind me of the 8/100ths of a second THRASHING you dealt out to me on the track once we arrived.

Paul,
It is actually illegal to run numbers on vehicles on the road. This is why rally vehicles are required to cover the numbers on transport stages. But hay if you can get away with it, why not!

Exactly.

I'm guessing it would have to do with promoting/encouraging street racing...

I am hearing people say is is illegal to have numbers on your car but I haven't seen the actual law quoted if there is one.
My first question to an officer wanting to book me for having a number on my car would be show me the regulation. If not I'll see you in court.
Oh, and all commercial vehicles better get their phone numbers off their vehicles also.
Cheers,
Bryan
