I Have Registration
Engineers report = Passed:3DSMILE:
Blue slip = Passed:3DSMILE: Request for a VIN number = 6 weeks finally got it:D RTA = two hours of explanation and label given:) This all means that after buying the kit in August 2004 it is registered March 2007.:3DSMILE: :D :D I don’t know how I ever lived without having a cobra to drive !!!!!!!!! I have sore cheek muscles from smiling all day. Driving these things is fantastic, the most fun anyone can have that’s legal. The rumble of those side pipes right next to your ear, the wind, the blistering acceleration. Bringing it home on the trailer, thumbs up, horn blasts, double takes and people following and fighting to pull in behind. Pulling in to a service station to fill her up. It takes five minutes to fuel up and twenty five minutes to answer every ones questions. No matter where you stop every one comes out of shops businesses and houses to ask questions. The same question over and over; "do you mind if I take a photo" But all this aside just the feeling of driving down the road is fantastic. Its all worth it in the end, to those already driving, I’m happy to be part of the club and to those still in the build keep on going. I’ll put some photo’s on the sight when I go slow enough for someone to take them! Cheers SNKBTE |
Unless theres 2 blue and white cobras in Bathurst...then you have been spotted by my dad already! I reckon your one bloke the cops may go easy on with the live pipes somehow :D
Well done mate! Cant wait till I get there. |
Well...congrats to you. :)
Now..we want all the pics and details. Like what revs for what speed whats ya rear end ratio whats 6th like on the highway. whats first wind out too what gears can ya spin wheels That should keep ya busy enough to stop smiling   |
Rego party
Good on ya Im not far behind.
Who did you use as a engineer ? 6 weeks was quite a long wait and why so long at the RTA? Again good on you |
Brett,
Well done and congratulations. As you are running the Corvette motor it will be interesting to see what its like on the dyno in std trim. Make sure you get a good tune before you do too much WOT action. Have fun:) Rebel, If Brett is running the 3.46 Ford diff he will be doing about 1500 rpm in 6th for 110kph. First is good for 70 odd kph and rubber can be left in first, second and third if they are street tyres. Phil:) |
Thanks Phil, I'm running a jag at 3.31 so that gives me some idea what I can expect.
The L76 I'm guessing will be similar to a healthy LS1 maybe a bit more torque down low. Thanks loads |
Rebel,
I would expect the L76 to have good lowdown torque. Be careful with the exhaust design. I have 1 3/4 side pipe primaries and lost a lot of torque down low:CRY: Thankfully I dont stay there too long:LOL: Regards, Phil |
Would you recommend 1.75 primaries?
Thanks |
Rebel,
I think the issue is the side pipe design.....just not as good as a properly designed under car system with cross overs and equal length pipes....at least at part throttle applications. However sidepipes do sound great. I would have a look at the LS1 site to see what works but suspect 1 5/8 may be sufficient for a standard motor but larger may be better if you plan a cam. Losing low down torque isnt a big deal as the Cobra is very light but you may notice it in 6th gear with the diff you are running. Regards, Phil |
SNKBTE,
You've managed to sum up everything thats good about these cars i.e. photos / noise / the feeling (not the Toyota one) / the general interest by all. Take my hat off (hard hat) to you for crossing the line - now you move into the "what can I change / improve stage"  WELL DONE |
Congratulations, I love your descriptions of driving the Cobra around.
Regards. |
Hi Phil, actually, I have no plans for side pipes.
I have a back problem which makes it hard enough just getting out of a cobra let alone worrying about side pipes. I'll be running under car and the only probs I see with that are meeting the noise requirments (easier than side pipes) and the ground clearance issues. I will be swopping out the cam after a while and it seems 17/8 is the go for primary pipes. I differ from you fellas in the gearbox department. I'm using the tremec 600RR box which has 2.87,1.89,1.28,1.1, and a .82 fifth. This is not terribly unlike your T56 but no 6th overdrive. Crunching the numbers tells me I'll be pulling around 2000rpm at 100klm. I'm happy with that. In looking at the dyno figures of the L76 it seems to be awfully close to a LS2 in the low revs up to about 3500 then the LS2 just steams ahead. Sorry bout the hi-jack but uncle phil started it :o Cheers |
As Phil mentioned, the sidepipes can really knock out some of the torque due to their short but fat size.
Ideally, for a stock LS1 (or even with a mildish cam), you want a four into one design, with a primary pipe size of 1.75 inches and length of between 35 and 40 inches. This will not be easy to acheive in a Cobra..... |
Thanks plums, now all I gotta do is wait till all you tuner types sort out the new PCM whatever you dark side types call it. ;) :D

snkbte,
Congratulations on Rego. I saw your car at Ian's workshop and it is one nice looking piece of kickar$e Cobra. I love your description of driving it and can't wait for the feeling. I got 1-3/4" primaries from Di Fillipo as he said that the outlet hole in the LS1 manifold was 43.5mm, so I should go with the 1-3/4". Being that he does exhaust for a living, and I sit on my chair in front of a computer. I reckoned he may know a bit more about it than I do. Hopefully, I will have the same problem as Phil. Low end torque being an issue, and just fix that with a bit of loss of traction. I love the solution Phil..**) **) |
Did you buy a header kit from DiFillipo's?
If so how much was it and did it have enough bends to make the headers? Hi Snkbte,
Sorry for the previous typo! I obviously wasn't concentrating :-( So once again... Congratulations on the registration :) Did you obtain you registration with both sidepipes active? Regards, |

Lots of questions here is some answers,:)
The Engineer I used was Lakesedge 02 43530866 in North Wyong. In getting it passed the credit goes to Ian at CR. The time delay related to sending the paperwork to the NSW RTA to get a VIN number issued. There is only one guy who can issue a number by spending 20minutes looking at the paperwork and then issuing a number, however, he was unable to spend that 20 minutes and it took him 6 weeks and numerous phone calls and promises before he did it. The two hours in the RTA was due to no one having ever done the rego on an ICV before. They made numerous phone calls and in the end said, "look we will just issue the rego and if anything is wrong I'll give you a call", pity they don't have my phone number and I do have a current label! Driving is more fun today than yesterday, but I am still trying to get the balance right in the brakes. At a 110 on the flat in 6th with Ian's working side pipes the Tacho sits at about 1200, Other than under decent accelleration it is easy to carry on conversations in the car. Other than the men in blue side pipes have little disadvantage. Had to set the tacho as a four cyclinder to get it to work properly. For some reason the Corvette motor requires this setting. Drove my daughter to school this morning, everyone came over, and one of the teachers suggested that the car might be a bit of a distraction to the kids and they would not settle into their morning classes! "DRRRRRRR":p I will now take her to school every chance. Cheers SNKBTE |
have fun
Congratulations SNKBTE,
Sounds like you are having fun, enjoy it. Phil |
Hi Boxhead,
The DiFillipo kit was great. Delivered, it was around $700 (I think) and had all the flanges and heaps of bends. I reckon I will have bends left over. I also got the collectors and 2" mandrels from them. So the cost include the 2" mandrels and the collectors. |
