Tyres sitting idle Question
Just ordered my wheels and looking to get some rubber for them now. Now Im not a big one for setting deadlines (just leads to dissapointment), but would like to have my car running in say 12 months....but it could be longer (and in all likelyhood it will be).
Should I wait to get rubber closer to when I know I want them - how long can a set of tyres sit until they start going bad? I think I will find it hard to get my new wheels and not want to chuck them on to see how they look - got excited yesterday trial fitting one of Mizzis fatter wheels on the back :p

I have Phil Mizzi's old wheels, and they have been sitting idle for about 18 months at least. Probably gone a little hard but look OK.
I suspect it will not matter on the street, but may cost time on the track.

Keep them out of the sunlight and sealed in plastic bags. They will last quite a while. If they're mounted, keep the pressure just high enough to hold the shape.

UV penetration is the biggest killer. So as Bob pointed out, keep them sealed away from light, especially direct sunlight.
You can buy rubber softener for the tread if it's gone hard. Works well on old race tyres. :D

Just Wait until you need the rubber... There is nothing like new rubber:D

Wait until you need them. Shiny wheels and tires look nice. But during the build they can get damaged, or get paint overspray on them.
In the garage during the build I used some old wheels and tires from my '66 Mustang on the back, and a pair of space saver tires on the front.

Good advice - i think Ill box em back up and keep rolling around on the old temporary ones for a while :)

Anyone want a set of second hand Sumitomos? 2x255/60/15 and 2x275/60/15Plenty of tread, decent road tyres but pretty ordinary on the track. Just collecting dust in the shed. Total price=nothing, you'll just have to pick them up from the Blue Mountains. PM me.

I think he's talking about using the old tyres to make a bonfire in the back yard. Gav's a very responsible driver.

I've got a set of yokahama's that are five years + I questioned this topic when I bought them..most tyre dealers said throw them away after five years. (fat chance) I then wrote to several tyre manufacturers and they said to check the tread blocks for cracking and softness. Neither of those symptoms are evident.They have seen sun only on rego inspections. Another call to the tyre makers and they said that the five year "limit" was related to the tyre warrantee not tyre life. Adding to that they were impressed that the tyres are still good and suggest I show them to a tyre fitter to get a final opinion. All I have done is kept them out of the sun & cool and maintained a reasonable pressure...so far so good.

Sooooooooooo does that make my tyres, purchased circa 2000 and never seen a road a little dodgy??????????
I'll have to check them out a little more closely but I don't recall issues with them as I've been squirming around the car fitting bits n pieces.
Certainly reckon the engineer wont have any problems unless they shred up on any on road test in front of him.
Mental note to one's self - don't press that right pedal too much for the engineer!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway donuts are made for consumption, aren't they?
