I have read your referred material, especially the NSW Government (I use that word with great reluctance) Draft Noise Leglislation which took me some time. Lucky I didn't push the 'Print' button before I decided to read it. Well I was looking for something to do for the afternoon.

I have a legal background and consider that on paper, they have virtually covered all the angles. The only thing that they haven't covered is where are they getting the resources from to enforce these new Regs. NSW is broke.

Under the superceded Regs, which were far simpler to translate than these new ones are, there was only one authorised Motor Vehicle Noise Inspection Officer employed by the EPA and he has retired. He was a personal friend of mine and spent nearly all his time in Court trying to support EPA bookings and had minimum time left for enforcement duties.

When I weigh up the odds of getting caught, I don't think Cobra driver's have too much to fear, but I would like to see a fair proportion of the Clubs, lobby their local State Pollies for the inclusion of a noise exemption for us.

Now is the time to do it, especially in NSW when the Legislation is still only in the draft form. I have already voiced my opinion to a really good friend who is a sitting member in the NSW Upper House. That member supports my idea and hopefully, with the assistance of her party, will oppose the Bill when it reaches the upper house for consent. Fingers X. Unfortunately, the Libs don't have the majority in the NSW Upper House and my friend is a Lib.

I know.(Light Globe is illuminated) Get some NSW Labour Upper House members to build Cobras. What a great idea.

My opinion is:- Who wants to drive a Cobra that you can't hear? Certainly not me.

Simply DONT VOTE LABOR every state has LABOR and they HATE modified cars. LABOR introduced speed limits in the NT and the road toll HAS INCREASED on the Stuart Hwy. The only "legal" emissions testing station is in VIC, and $4000 a go pass or fail. To issue a fine the cops have prove that you failed a ADR complience test. If you read the ADRS you will find that a mic on the side of the road doesnt test IAW the ADRS so evry court challange will win.

Also the ADR test DOES NOT REQUIRE the engine to go over 3000 RPM so if you get booked by one of these unmaned testers you simply say you were over 3000 rpm.

I believe the test is supposed to be done at peak torque for that particular motor. 3000RPM just happens to be around that mark but mine was actually tested by the engineer at 3800RPM.

That pic in Bernie posted is actually the results on my old Pursuit Ute. It had an after market system on it but was still pretty quiet. My noise meter has a max hold function on it which lets you set up the meter and jump in the car, rev it up to what ever RPM and then go back and see what the result was. I think that 89.2dB @ 1 meter was at about 3500 RMP from memory (Still legal levels).

For my donk I think that's 3750 rpm and I know mine's actually very close to the magic 90 dB limit now but have to test properly to confirm!

In the NT whatever ADR is applicible to your car you MUST comply. Thats how LABOR brought in emissions in the NT. Before there was no emission requirements. Now all modified cars must go through the TAC ( including 9 inch conversions which causes some headaches if you had a 9inch conversion for years before they changed the rules) which will state the ADR you have to comply with. So if you can prove a 502 ram jet complies with the ADR and an engineer will sign off on it you can put it in any car you like.
They basicly have put the responsibilty on the engineer, If he says it comply with the INTENT of the ADRs MVR are happy.

Hope this isn't off topic...I'm a newbie *about* to buy one of two cobras...the noise pollution thing is interesting. What if you *want* to let it rip (i.e. not short shift) *and* keep the noise reasonable. Is it possible to do that? One cobra has a small block ford motorsports crate gt40 motor. The other a big 427 tricked out motor.

Tom, I remember reading an article on the web, very scientific in nature but it proved through a series of tests that it was possible to build a very quiet exhaust with no power loss. It involved 'tuning' the entire system from intake to exhaust tip, using resonator boxes in the right places to balance out pulse waves, etc. But while it is technically possible, the problem with the Cobra is that sidepipes do not allow for silencers, resonators, crossover pipes and so on due to their position and short length. I'm sure with some effort that it is possible to get close, but 90db is pretty damn quiet for a 'tricked out' 427!
