VDO Fuel Tank Sender

Hi Guys
Its Sunday (VDO supplier not open) and I am putting in the fuel tank sender and notice the whole thing has no cover and could actually sit in the fuel. This is a 12v variable resistor which potentialy could spark (am I missing something).
The sender is a VDO float type. What have you other VDO users done or is this not an issue.
