Get some good advice on the process and have a go yourself.
Once prepared for primer with all bits filled and sanded ready for primer paint, you can always ellicit advice as to whether the finish is good enough, and given the cars are all curve, it's either a small palm sander always on the move or hand sanding, either way a fair bit of time.
I've seen the finish of an amateur prepared car and it was excellent after spraying by a professional mob.
I've learnt off boat preparation for paint, lots of time and patience and you will get a good result, for the price of your time. This saves your money for that quality paint finish, the bit it sounds like you want a professional to do anyway.
Just get some good preparation advice first.
