Christmas Wish List?
OK everyone, it's that time of year when the big man with a white beard in a bright red suit visits your home workshop/garage/shed and leaves you something that you just have to have...so, what's on everyone's Santa list this year?
With getting my Cobra registered a few weeks ago, I'm thankful and do accept that I got my Christmas present early!...But, I just can't help myself by looking at all the goodies that I could wish for that would either keep my Cobra maintained, cleaned and generally pampered! Aussie Mike, your reference to a Hare & Forbes low trolly jack in another thread prompted me to puruse their website - boy, they really do have nice toys, don't they?? Regards.....Paul |
I have just finished a gruelling 12 month course at work so I bought myself a nice alloy dart block stuffed with all the good bits...just waiting for delivery.

Santa is getting me a new Variable Nozzle Turbo for my Land Rover. He's not happy about it either as he's also got to clean up the oil slick in the garage left by the old turbo. :mad:
I used up all my christmas and birthday presents for the next milenium when I got the lathe and mill a little while back. %/ Cheers |

Yep. Driving back from up country on Saturday night and the oil feed line on the turbo came loose and starved the turbo of oil. The first I knew of it was the engine losing power. The turbo had siezed but I managed to limp home.
I've been researching the turbo options and they used a really small unit on the TD5 to maximise low end boost and response. However they are restrictive up top and run some very high shaft speeds. The unit I'm replacing this little turd with is a variable vane turbo. They have a ring of blades around the exhaust turbine that directs and controls the exhaust flow. The upshot is that the turbo behaves like a small turbo down low and opens up to a big turbo up top. Should make more power across the board at much lower shaft speeds. Cheers |
Sounds like what they're running in the new 911 turbos mate. Perhaps add extra hose clamps / sikaflex / threadlock on that oil feed line too. :)

I believe its a similar unit to the new Porsche. They have been using VNT turbos on Diesels for a while now. Petrol engines have been a problem because they run much higher exhaust temps and keeping the vanes working in that environment is a problem.
It was the banjo bolt on the turbo that worked its way loose and caused the oil leak. Keep an eye on yours. Not any fault of the vehicle itself, just bad luck I guess. When I stripped the turbo I found one broken blade on the turbine wheel. That may have caused vibration that worked the oil feed loose but I doubt it. I found a good turbo diesel mechanic near by. I was quoted about $1200 to rebuild the turbo or $1800 to buy a new VNT. It was a fairly easy decision to make. You'll have to take it for a spin when it's done to compare. Cheers |
Mike, nothing like a good excuse to upgrade the go-fast bits! How do you reckon the auto will hold up? Will attempt the fuel reg changeover on ours between xmas and Jan 5th, so I might be in touch re your offer to help out.

all I want is to right parts to turn up and some free undisturbed time to work on the Cobra, but if I dont get them a remote control helicopter will do. (pick it up tomorrow anyway so all is good this year and all the best to everyone here be safe and enjoy the time with your families.
