Right Oil for T5 Gearbox
There is a lot of advice on the internet and in the lubrication guides for the T5. What is experiences have you guys had with different kinds of lubricants for the T5? The manual says Dextron II or III. Others suggest Castrol Syntrans.

G'Day Merv,
Penrite 10/10ths 75-90 synthetic oil was the recommended oil when I bought my tremec. Expensive because you've got to buy 1-1/2 bottles of the stuff...they don't sell 1/2 bottles.

75-90 is way too heavy for the T-5. I used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and it worked very well. |

T-5
I just rebuilt my T-5 and the only lube the parts supplier and the manual say to use is ATF..any gear oil is too heavy and will not propely lube.There is an article I think from Hanlon on rebuilding the T-5 |

When I purchased my super duty T-5 the builder told me to only use Mercon V transmission fluid with one tube of Limited Slip Additive. I followed his suggestion and the tranny shifts great three years later. Something tells me that there are several different lube combos that will work equally well from reading all the suggestions. I think there are other old threads on the forum about this question as well.

The correct oil to use depends whether it is a world class or non world class. World class with fiber blocking rings uses only ATF, non world class with brass blocker rings uses 75~90 weight.Using 75~90 weight in a world class will destroy the blocking rings. |

OK then I gather that the transmission number determines which type it is. The lists that I have don't seem to include my number.

I don't know about the T5, but I use Redline superlight Shockproof gear oil in T56's. It's similar to an ATF but has much better resistance to extreme load and shock loading (as the name suggests)..... |

Redline IS good stuff but hard to get sometimes. I used it in an MGA Twincam 'box some years ago and it made a huge difference. The T5 manual says an ATF, however.

Redline could be worth vintaging then? Has anyone got a table of T5 gearbox numbers that tells me what type this one is and so on?

T5 ford use 2.7 quarts of fluid. There is a tag on the tailhousing that begins with 1352. The numbers after that tell you what year/torque rating the trans is from. Hanlon Motorsports should be able to tell you the year and if it is a world vlass or non world class from this ID number. They have a website. You can also do a search for T5 tag umbers as charts are out there. Brian |

I am running a 5 speed with Tremac gears. My builder put 30wt non-detergent engine oil in. Says it will shift better with it, been running for 11/2 years with no problems.
