Just got back from my drive in my Ford corsair (aka Pintara) - to learn I was in fact,.....wrong. Damn. :p

Aussie Mike 02-18-2009 01:09 AM

You're wrong and you drive a crappy car. Two insults for the price of one. :p

boxhead 02-18-2009 01:12 AM

Haaaa Haaa, Haaa. Poor Andrew.

Paul, I wonder if that means Chassis frame or rolling Chassis?

Now I dont really drive a corsair (the truth is even worse)...just a little "badge engineering" humour that I though was relevant.

Anyway - even more reason the go the kirkham. :)

As well as supplying Shelby with frames and bodies which according to
David Kirkham come as one unit, they also supply "some" parts as well.

Regards.

OK,

Thanks all for the input. Looks like the vote is: If the engineering of the finished car is of a comparable standard, then the Shelby is the preferred investment, given a reasonably close (within 10%) purchase price.

There is no doubt a 100% Kirkham car, finished by an excellent builder is a piece of engineering art. So please don't take this as a negative on the Kirkham cars, I love them too.

I appreciate the replies.

Thanks

Cameron

Seems I bought my cobra too soon (RMC 1996) there are so many "improved" versions out there. I'm still modifying and building mine today. I'll finish it eventually (then the fuel will run out) ha ha ha

There are plenty of if's in there.
Which I agree with, from what I have seen via this forum then the quality of the Kirkham complete product is nothing short of superb.
I do not know enough of the Shelby product to know what the quality is like, nor have I been out checking price comparisons.

Number 1 priority is the quality.

Cameron Parsons 02-20-2009 06:38 AM

Yes there's a ton of if's. Without the if's I would have not a chance of reaching a conclusion!! (not that I have anyway!) :JEKYLHYDE

But if 'it' were all about quality, then a Lexus or Audi would be worth way more than a Ferrari or Maserati. (given they have improved in recent years)

tis a strange world we live in. Look at the price of Oil....

The base Kirkham has billet aluminum suspension pieces (not to be confused with their one off billet aluminum frame car). It is a rather expensive option to get the original style suspension on the Kirkham.

The CSX4000 suspension is probably more like the original cobras, but is certainly not indentical to the original.

Both CSX4000 and Kirkham have modern brakes, but I believe they are from different manufacturers.

When you say body and chassis, does this include all front and rear control arms, etc?
Because I struggle to believe it would be feasable for Shelby to buy a Kirkham Chassis then go and make there own control arms, uprights, hubs, diff assys etc when it is all available from Kirkham.
I had thought that Shelby bought what would basically be a rolling body/chassis combo from Kirkham, can anyone confirm that?

I know exactly what you mean!

building for 13 years

mate, you guys need a medal if youve been building a cobra for 13 years and its still not finished. i spent 11 years rebuilding an xy 347 custom ute and nearly chucked it in a couple of times untill the wife said take the money and finish it whatever it costs, that got me motivated. nothing wrong with an rmc, harrisons are copied off them arent they. just finish em cos youre a long time dead. tomcat

Rob. Smith 02-22-2009 04:10 AM

TomCat, Thanks for the encouragement. I've 'only' been building for 10 years. I bought the RMC in a panic when I heard the company was being sold. The RMC was the next best thing from the Robnel at the time and cheaper with equal structual quality. ( didn't matter anyway ) and I was in the finishing stages of a 9 year restoration of a Mustang for a cousin so the cobra sat for 3 years while I finished the mustang and collected bits for the cobra. Suprising how many of those bits have run out of warranty or have been replaced. A lot of my innovations have been discovered by others too. ha ha ha
