Shelby Continuation or Kirkham for Australia
Consider the can of worms officially opened.
2 questions... If you have the choice of bringing a Shelby CSX4000 series or a Kirkham 427 into Australia, what would you choose, assuming the same spec powerplant, options etc.... both Aluminium bodied. Given the choice above, which do you think would have the highest resale value? I know there are a multitude of "depends what you want in a car, cruise, race, etc..." Let's try to make this a little vanilla and see where the trend lies. I'd do this as a poll if I had the faintest Idea how to do it!! Cameron |
I'd bring in the Shelby CSX4000 series..... only because Shelby is my daughters name and I think that would be cool :p

On resale I reckon the Shelby. On principle I would go the Kirkham :)

I think that I'd go with the Kirkham.
I agree that for many the Shelby name would have added appeal but I think when it came time to put down my own $$ it would be on the Provo rocket LoBelly |
I think the Shelby name would carry weight on resale even down here in Aus. That being said I reckon the market in Aus for a high end Cobra like that is getting pretty small.
Either one would get your average aussie Cobra enthusiats very excited if they saw it driving by. To my way of thinking I could have a couple of very nice toys for the same money as one CSX car. Cheers |
I reckon the best car as far as quality goes must be the Kirkham, but if your after bragging rights you couldnt go past the CSX 4000 series.
I would hate to be in a position to have to choose between the two. Regards. |
I would go the SHELBY way, they are recognized by SAAC as a Shelby car
and when someone asks, "What is it?", I could say without fear of contradiction, "A SHELBY COBRA!"..................'Kirkham who?'.................. |
Speaking from experience [i own a kirkham] a shelby would fetch more money but if you are after precision and qaulity kirkham is the answer. Ive driven and looked @ Shelby , the build and qaulity is very average i think unfortunately their interest lays in cashing in on the name,but the Kirkhams is pure passion.

From my limited knowledge, I thought that Kirkham supplied cars to Shelby?
If that is the case then the Shelby car should be the same quality as the Kirkham car? I am not sure what the buy price difference is but if I could afford it and the Shelby car was within approx 15- 20% of the Kirkham car then I would get the Shelby, purely for bragging rights and resale value. If the price difference was higher I would most likely go the Kirkham (dont need to brag that much). If however Shelby cars are supplied from a different source and the quality is not to the same standard as Kirkham then I would go with the quality car. |
Kirkham supplied (supplies?) bodies only to Shelby I believe.

As a number of you will remember, whilst researching my options a couple of years ago before buying my SPF, I was working out of Houston in the US and was therefore lucky enough to visit Kirkham and drool all over a couple of their Cobras...I also had a good look at one CSX4000 continuation series car that was about 12 months old at the time (which still made me drool, but just not quite as much as when I looked over the Kirkhams!) and I also visited Mike Mclusky's workshop in LA who's work on both original Cobras as well as the Kirkham Cobras is renowned....He was amazingly hospitable and spent a good 45 mins showing me around all the original and Kirkham Cobras his workshop was working on at the time...His perspectives and respect for the Kirkhams was clearly evident. Whoever summarised the motivational difference between a Kirkham and a CSX4000 series as being "Pure Passion" vs "Commercial" could not have said it better in my view...The Kirkham is pure enginerering indulgence and something to behold! I love my SPF and it has given me more excitement and enjoyment than I could ever have predicted, but I don't think there would be many Cobra lovers that would not go weak in the knees over an Aluminium body! I was at the all Ford day here in Geelong last weekend and there was a Cobra with a sign on it saying it was a real one. It had a glass body and looked like any other high end replica. If it had had an alloy body it's authenticity would have been more believable.

Many reasons to endorse both cars. I will only say that when the question of quality or workmanship is brought up, I would invite anyone to take a close look at the CSX4000 cars (or any Shelby-series Cobras for that matter) that Billy Andrews completes at HRE in Long Island. They stand toe-to-toe with any Kirkham I've ever seen and his attention to detail, can-do attitude, and overall willingness to do it the way you want it has resulted in CSX4252 being more than what I could have ever imagined. Kirkhams are great cars, but so are the CSX4000's.

Hi David, from what I understand the chassis and aluminium bodies
both come from Kirkham. Its funny that as of about a year ago both Kirkham and Superformance cars have been included into the Shelby World Registry. Regards. |
So are they just not assembled as well at Shelby in comparison to Kirkham?
When you say body and chassis, does this include all front and rear control arms, etc? Because I struggle to believe it would be feasable for Shelby to buy a Kirkham Chassis then go and make there own control arms, uprights, hubs, diff assys etc when it is all available from Kirkham. I had thought that Shelby bought what would basically be a rolling body/chassis combo from Kirkham, can anyone confirm that? |
I had never heard of Kirkham supplying frames to shelby - I thought it was just bodies - although I have been known to be wrong.......I might go for a drive in my Toyota Lexan and contemplate that for a bit. :)

I must admit, I also thought it was just the bodies that were suppied by Kirkham to Shelby, but I'm not 100% sure!

Update....I just had a look at a recent CC post (1/1/09) by David Kirkham and he states in his signiture that Kirkham are "...Supplier of frames and aluminum bodies to Shelby for their CSX4000, CSX7000, and CSX8000 289 and 427 Cobra"...
