Chrome plating sidepipes
Seems like CO EPA has come down on chroming stuff locally. I am chroming my rollbars and want chrome side pipes, but have heard Cobra guys say they powdercoat theirs because of discoloration...? I don't mind a bit of discoloration, I suppose..anybody have any input of chrome vs. "chrome-like" powdercoating?

I had my sidepipes ceramic coated. They run much cooler. After two years no discoloring.

I have had chrome pipes on mine for thirteen years and they still look great. I have tried many different products and find that MOTHERS MAG &ALUMINUM POLISH works the best. I have used it for thirteen years and still find it the best for taking out the discoloration. I still try different polishes when I hear someone say how great they are but I always go back to the mothers. All it takes is a little elbow grease and they will come back like new.

The sidepipes on my Classic Cobra were chrome. I ran it for 3 years with no discoloration. I used Mothers wax on them, but I have used Autosol on my bike pipes, to remove discoloration. Seems to work pretty good on them.

I had chrome sidepipes on mine. Everything was fine until a child stood on the drivers side and put a scratch in it that could not be buffed out. I removed them and installed stainless side pipes. They will not blue and I clean Them with Mothers and a powerball.

I had the same experience as Jax. Chrome pipes; major scratchng; can't buff out. The other nice thing about stainless is they won't rust out. My chrome pipes rusted out pretty quickly. Stainless of course, isn't as bright as chrome.

Anybody give me an idea of what it ought to cost to either chrome, powder coat or ceramic-ized a set of pipes? I'd like to get an idea of how much cooler ceramic are than chrome...does the coolness factor of chrome outweigh cooler temp pipes? I will probably just wait till after this NE event and check out a few setups with this in mind. All being equal I like chrome.

I don't know where you are located, this can be a factor if there is shipping involved. To have my pipes and headers ceramic coated with a "chrome like" finish was 200.00. I can bring my car up to operating temp, and if you have an old callused hand like mine you can put your hand on the muffler. It is hot but it will not blister the skin back and give someone a terrible burn, like I have seen by stainless.

That's impressive. My stainless pipes have given me and my riders very bad burns when wearing shorts and just touching the pipes for an instant.

My chrome side pipes do the same dandy burns as Pauls. Just a touch and it blisters. I ceramic coated the collector pipes and they seem to be a little cooler. Don't think I'm going to touch them to find out though.
Going to have to invest in a set of the heat shields or my lady is going to stop riding with me. I have to get out and cover the pipe before she'll get out now.
She's gotten a nasty burn and that was enough.
